“I grew up pretendin’ sticks were little guns”
After the family grill night, you had to babysit;
Ghost was over at your place again, watching your niece and nephew with you out in the yard.
Your sister had called a few days earlier to ask if you could babysit her kids for the weekend and you of course said yes, you loved your niece and nephew.
Spending time on your porch into the yard, the kids, running around with the sticks they found, making little “pew”, “pow” and “boom” sounds with big smiles and loud laughing.
They are playing again, acting like they have guns..
You look over at Ghost, sitting there, who is keeping an eye on them, his coffee in hand, and your crocheted blanket you had made years back over his lap, you couldn’t help but smile at him.
As he looked back towards you, you quickly turned your gaze back to the kids, hearing him let out a slight chuckle, he definitely caught you looking at him again.
He would just play along, like he didn’t see you staring from the corner of his eye, the gaze you keep on the kids, warm and comforting.
Something he had been longing for so long, and many years.
He shifts a little in the chair, it was just a basic wooden chair you had laying over in the shed that you moved onto the porch so he had somewhere to sit with you.
You haven’t said much today, or yesterday, you’ve been too caught up looking after the kids, you’ve wanted to say so much, but nothing is coming out of your mouth.
It would be too early to confess anything to him.
You must wait, just a bit longer, I mean, he didn't have a wife or kids.. Just him and his dog, and well now you and some way.
As you two watch the kids, you shit in your chair, looking down at the mug in your hand, the sun hitting the coffee and reflecting off it, it looked pretty.
Oh well, back to the kids you need to keep it in mind, the kids, you’re supposed to watch them.
As it slowly starts getting grey and cloudy you call the kids to you and get them inside, as you and Ghost follow after them into the house.
You guys all go to the sofa and sit down. The kids sat on the floor, in front of the couch, you curl up onto the couch, legs folded up under you, Simon sitting beside you, he steals a few glances at you, as you reach for the tv remote, to turn on a movie for you all.
The kids jump from excitement. It’s Fantastic Mr Fox, a Wes Anderson movie, oh how you loved his movies, you wished for the day your wedding would happen, the whole wedding would be filmed in the style of his movies, you’re going off trail again reader, focus, you’re babysitting, just for a few more hours today, then your sister is picking the kids up again.
Gosh has it already been a whole weekend..
You look down at the kids, they’re overly focused on the movie, you haven't seen them sit this still at all when you babysat them this weekend.
You lean your head onto Simon’s shoulder, relaxing, closing your eyes.
He didn’t move, he just let out a quiet “Oomf” noise as your head landed on his shoulder, he wasn’t expecting that at all, though he didn’t mind it.
Half way through the movie, there’s a knock on the door.
You slowly groan, before getting up from the couch, gliding into your inside slippers while fixing your sweater with little black cats and pumpkins on it, oh you loved your little fall sweaters.
As you reached the door looking out the peephole, your sister.
Probably here to pick up her kids again, you open the door to greet her with a smile.
“Hi.. You’re here early” you say in a soft tone, slightly annoyed that she was here 4 hours too early, but she probably had a good reason for it.
“Hi Y/N, yeah, sorry ‘bout that, but we have to pick up dad at the airport again.” she says to you with a smile, oh she looks tired, almost sleep deprived.
You choose not to question it, and step out of the way to let her in.
“Coffee?” you ask her as you walk back to the middle between the living room and kitchen, as you look at your sister, she just nodded.
You sigh and smile, walking to the kitchen, “They’re in the livingroom” you say as you turn on the kettle.
Your sister greeted Simon, as they were both walking, your sister walking to the living room, and Simon to you in the kitchen.
He was a shy man around your sister, he knows that she’s a nice person, he just feels awkward around her, he isn’t sure why, and you’re really not sure either.
“She doesn’t bite, Simon” you say with a joking tone, as he wraps his arms around you from behind as you’re making the coffee for your sister.
He just grunts back as a reply with “I know.”
You let out a sigh “You want one too?” you ask Simon, clearly talking about a cup of coffee
You wait for his reply as you pour up a cup for your sister, he just grunts again, okay then.. You make him a cup too, placing it on the side from him as he lets go of you and you grab the other cup walking to the living room.
“Here you go” you tell your sister as you hand her the coffee.
She smiles with a soft “Thank you so much.”
She holds the cup with both hands and leans on the couch, as the kids continue watching the movie, they haven’t even realised that their mom had arrived yet, way too captured by the movie.
Simon slowly made his way back over to you in the living room, staying close by your side, the cup in one hand, the other around your hip, pulling you close to his side with a slight smile as he sips from his coffee.
As the movie ends the kids turn around to see their mom on the couch, and not you and Simon, they basically bounce to their feet “Mom!” they yell out in unison.
You cover your mouth to giggle at their excitement.
You smile softly at your sister “Just place the cup on the table, i’ll clean later.”
She just nods and gets up getting the kids ready to leave and you help packing all their things up in their bags, and placing them by the door. As your sister and the kids walk to the door, you place two big smooches on their cheeks before they leave.
You and Simon wave from the door as your sister and the kids get into the car and drive out of your driveway.
