Today at Pompeii was the Festival of the Dead. The Feralia was celebrated, and sacrifices as well as offerings were made to the Manes - the spirits of the dead who wandered among the living, seeking propitiation. During the Feralia, offerings were made at the graves of deceased ancestors, which consisted of: flower garlands, ears of corn, wheat, a pinch of salt, bread soaked in wine and scattered violets.

Through death, he destroyed him who had the empire of death, i.e. the devil. (Hebrews 2:14)
