SHE'D KNOWN THESE WOODS her whole life; chasing prey through the brush, playing with haku in the creek, attempting to climb the tallest trees. day in and day out, the forests of rtalis were all she knew — the sights, the sounds, the smells. even now, padded paws tread silently through the soft foliage underfoot, a breeze carrying the colorful leaves of the falling season down around her. instinct guided her steps, twisting around tree roots and boulders as she followed a scent now so familiar.
haru'niya was seemingly in a perpetual state of confusion these days, strange thoughts and emotions plaguing her mind. every passing encounter with the man left her feeling more and more odd; she had never met a human that she didn't eat — that she wouldn't eat. instead, they spoke. talk of family and loved ones, of hardship and struggle. she had never conversed this much with anyone except haku, her brother having been her only lifeline to the human world for so long. the light of the setting sun kisses her face as siyun comes into view, and it isn't long before they are speaking once again.
she liked to watch him while he talked. the cat had convinced herself it was to keep an eye on him — to make sure he didn't try anything — but perhaps that was just her stubbornness. in truth, listening to him speak gave her a benign sense of curiosity, a desire to learn more. this man knew what she was, had seen what she could do; why did he stay? why did he continue to come back? and why did the idea of this all ending make her stomach feel tight? it was a hard sensation to ignore, but as was the tranquility that washed over her when they spent time together like this.
her expression is serene, a small smile on her lips, as she talks of haku's name day coming in the winter. he would be eleven this year. after, she pauses, gaze falling away.
"...it's a little strange. i think i've started looking forward to seeing you."
a warmth buds in her chest at the admission, a feeling she can't place spreading through her limbs along with it. grey eyes wander back to the other in search of his reaction, her curiosity sated by the expression on his face. haru's smile broadens then in response to his reciprocation, a softness coming over her own features in kind. doubt prickles lightly at her heart, though, her smile waning all too soon.
was it really safe, being honest with him like this? there was always this air of uncertainty creeping through her mind when she did so, but what could she be afraid of? the answers laid wrapped in teeth; he could hurt her — could use this weakness against her. why did he keep coming here? why did she keep coming here? why didn't she eat him?
me too.
« me too. »
me too.
the cat is shaken from her thoughts as siyun speaks again, haru brushing off the tingling sensation in her nerves. her earlier smile pulled at her lips once more as their gazes met, a chuckle even slipping out in response to the other. haru shook her head before laying back to stretch widely amongst the leafage below. her eyes turn to watch the sun slowly dip below the horizon, stars beginning to shine against the blanket of nightfall. her tone is teasing and accent heavy as she speaks, a strange feeling of calm settling over her as she lay by his side.
"no? should that be a, er, shock?" that was how he'd said it, right? "perhaps you try neighboring village instead of beastkin woods and you have more luck."
