BCTAMA

Bushwalk is an interactive virtual experience that takes the user on a visual/audio journey through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful and pristine environments. During your journey, you will be able to interact with some of New Zealand’s unique flora and fauna.

This is the sound effect I created for our cleaner happier stage, I was able to use a base track created by Goodbyte a creator on freesound a website where people can share their work under creative commons I was also able to find waves crashing on rocks created by Yoyodaman234, I distorted the base clip by lowering the pitch, tone and speed to make it sound childlike and happy. The waves just needed to be clearer so I removed the background noise and tried to leave just the waves.

This is the sound I created to represent Taniwha Horotiu, I recorded myself reciting ‘Ka mate’ a haka from the people of Ngāti Toa, Ka mate, Ka mate (Will I die, will I die) Ka ora, ka ora ( will I live, will I live) is the first verse of the haka this resonated with me because without action the question of whether our environment can sustain is something that has become less likely. I was able to record a bounce sound using the chirp feature in Audacity and then paulstreched the recording to make it sound like wind, I wanted to recreate the sound produced by a traditional Maori instrument the Purerehua as this sound is used to create a sense of fear or menace when telling a story.

Process

First I created some parameters, As I wanted to create a box that would automatically size my finger joints. These parameters allow for me to choose how many fingers I won't per side.

I then drew a sketch of a rectangle to create the bottom panel, extruded that and drew another sketch on the front face(length side) of that rectangle so I could extrude my first finger.

I then used the rectangular pattern to create a finger joint pattern along the face and also used that pattern and transferred it to the other side of the panel. I did the exact same on the width side of the bottom panel also. I was then able to draw a sketch along the length of the bottom panel to create the front panel, I used the rectangle pattern to create the fingers and also to create a new body that would be the back panel, I followed these steps to create the left and right side panels.

I used the rectangle pattern to create a new body from the bottom panel to create the top, I then split the bodies to create the main box and a lid. 

As I initially used assists from the Mc Masters I had to remodel a hinge.

As it's my younger brothers graduation later this year I have been working on a Waihaika as a gift for being the first of our line to finish higher education, As such I felt a box that would house the weapon would be something I could work on for digital fabrication. Making sure your model is parametric is something I have had trouble with also making the hinges on the model rotate in unison has got me stumped.

We have been looking at different ways of how we are going to control our game, We looked at joysticks, thought about making an app. But we finally decided that we would use an NES controller to tie back into that early Nintendo sidescroller vibe. I've started to model a controller in Fusion 360, As the space in Aotea square is very large ultimately we would like to create a giant version of the control to draw in attention.

This is one of the pieces I've made for our dystopian stage. Ive used a sample by ~Visager || visagermusic at gmail dot com. @visagermusic on twitter called Eerie Mausoleum Loop.  I slowed the pace and tempo added base And added sirens a cannon blast and an evil laugh to make it sound like the end of the world. I was able to obtain the base track and sirens through free sources under creative commons with attribution.

Wk 9-10: As we have decided we need music, I created a survey to get some feedback on what sounds people associate with certain environments or feelings.

Questions Asked:

What sounds do you associate with New Zealand?

- The sounds of Birds was the highest-ranked answer, Tui being the only bird actually described. Oceans, rivers and running water were also common answers. 

What sounds Do you associate with Climate change?

- The most common theme for the sound of climate change revolved around the sound of fire (Burning, Sizzle, Fire crackling). It was surprising to see three responses state Silence as the sound they associated with climate change, I was able to contact one responder that answered silence to gain a better understanding of what they meant, His response was the ‘silence’ that is coming from the government on the issue of climate change.  

When you think of Auckland city what sounds come to mind?

- Traffic by far was the most common answer(Cars, trains). People came in second this was not surprising considering Auckland city is our largest CBD.

What sounds do you associate with peace?

- Birds again was the most common answer, Aspects of nature(Wind, Water) were also associated with peace.

What sounds do you associate with Chaos? 

- Screaming, shouting and yelling were all very common answers, Cars crashing and loud bangs were also often answered.

I look to use this information to add to the music I have created on audacity to further tie our project back to the space(Aotea Square).

We have been asked to ‘replicate a model of a daily object, how it exists now or a speculative design on what your chosen object will look like in 50-100 years’. I chose to go with a Mug, I wanted to tie it back somehow with our studio project (Interactive game that focuses on climate change) so I looked into sustainable materials.

 As climate change/pollution awareness becomes a bigger part of daily life, Less and less plastic will be used, Reverting back to materials used prior to plastic will become more and more common. As New Zealand forests are predominantly made up of Pinus radiata (89% of the country's plantation forests) I thought this could be a good material.

We decided we wanted to go with a pixilated art style, similar to early side scroller games from the 80s and 90s.

As a group, we are finding it difficult to incorporate all our ideas into one, Some feedback was given by Jenna and Nolwenn in our first crit and they agreed, they said that we had some good ideas, just that we needed to somehow find a way to mould them into a single, unified idea. 

We talked about Creating a game that looked at addressing the effects of climate change/development and pollution on our waterways and oceans and the many species of animal that are affected also, as I am Looking at incorporating aspects of Tikanga Maori and traditional/cultural customs(Tikanga, Kaitiakitanga), I Have been looking at Maori stories to do with Auckland central(Waihorotiu stream and Taniwha Horotiu), Taniwha Horotiu is said to have lived in a den on the banks of Waihorotiu stream, a stream that runs under queen street. His den was supposedly in the swampy areas of the stream that eventually became Aotea Square, This could be a very interesting way of incorporating Maoritanga.

Logo prototypes

A few of the logos I've been working on. Kaitiaki is a New Zealand Māori term used for the concept of guardianship, for the sky, the sea, and the land. It isn't our name just a current name holder. Edit: I was able to get some opinions on our logos from people at Aotea square, As our game is intended for younger generations we asked people between the ages of 14-25 what their favourite choice was based on what caught there eye first. We were only able to get 10 responses unfortunately from people at the square it's rather hard to get people's attention in the city. Both designs on the left hand recieved 4 votes each and the other two got 1 each. It's pretty early to be doing logos but if we have a colour scheme 4 weeks in it could be a big help.
