Step one: don’t listen to anything I say ‘cause I’m no expert on this.

Step two: okay! The first thing I get down are the flat colors.

Step three: the shadows are added in a “multiply” layer. This is a dark blue painted with a brush tool. Soft edges where the transition is rounded, hard edges where it’s flatter (like with cast shadows).

Step four: highlights are added with a “luminosity” layer. This is a bright aqua on the surface side with even brighter strings where the ripples occur. On the ocean floor side I use a softer yellow reflecting the brightness from below.

Step five: the outlines are colored over using a masking layer. This is just a pure color layer that stays within the opacity of the line layer below it.
