rereading one of us is lying, and despite the claims that are always made about it being 'like the breakfast club', it's actually pretty little liars.
it's even formatted like a tv show
i love knowing nothing about actors personal lives. i love watching the behind the scenes interviews after end of a tv show and realizing that joey schmopelli from the jersey shore is played by an extremely british man that they've had contending with an american accent for seven seasons. they'll be like "oh yeah we had to film around marleen's pregnancy, that's why katie is always wearing an awkward bag this entire season" and i'll be like "ooo congrats on the baby... well, no longer a baby, probably... damn that was a nice bag!". "oh they're happily married? to other people? wow they're good at their job i believed them!"
obviously if they make it my problem i'll have to contend with whatever their beliefs are, but generally it's just like, you go girl! i love seeing you solve mysteries every week with your variable amounts of psychic ability, always a great time!
at some point you have to realize that you actually have to read to understand the nuance of anything. we as a society are obsessed with summarization, likely as a result of the speed demanded by capital. from headlines to social media (twitter being especially egregious with the character limit), people take in fragments of knowledge and run with them, twisting their meaning into a kaleidoscope that dilutes the message into nothing. yes, brevity is good, but sometimes the message, even when communicated with utmost brevity, requires a 300 page book. sorry.
anyway the narrator of downfall teasing the subject about feeling like a poet, while using the most pretentious name they could think of for new jersey. you know, like a poet.

new noah kahan album is very thought provoking, but unrelated to all of that, something about how he clearly loves and aches for and is a piece of the place he grew up makes me, in turn, feel more connected to the place that shaped me
i love antiques roadshow. every episode, without fail, someone will show up with a dubiously obtained cultural artifact from a group the holder is not part of. in the less recent seasons, the appraiser will usually hem and haw over the item like "soooo you might have to consider getting this repatriated. consider looking that up in your own time" but in the most recent season they'll straight up say "soooo this was grave robbed. here's the exact sequence of how country b invaded country a and robbed their graves to sell artifacts to american military" or imply that the holder's family exploited the rightful owners to get it.
oh also if america is cursed, it is because we stole from all the graves. truly a spiders georg alternative, wherein by eating enough spiders, you will eventually consume one that is poisonous. or, in this case, very cursed.
thinking of the guy saying something like 'yeah so my grandfather had a trading post and the native americans that he traded with were pretty desperate for goods & services,,, anyway this extremely well made, heavy, large piece of jewelry was just left in the ground one day,, and i found it. no one ever came to collect it,, no i have never looked into provenance of this type of work, nor do i know anything about the tribe or group it came from, it's just so hard to learn these things',,
is he not haunted?
I love antiques roadshow. I love it when Mathilda from DeMoines is on TV for the first time in her life and doesn't know what to do with her hands. I love it when a dude with a dumb hat rubber necks from the background. I love it when they tell someone that if their item was different, or not that item, they would be rich. But it's not so they're poor and they have to go home in shame. I love when someone brings a fine example of Shropshire custardwork from 1807 and finds out it has a clock in it that they never knew about. I LOVE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW

anyway the thing about the wedding banquet (1993) (cw for discussion of rape) is that the letterboxd reviews are FULL of people going “this is an EVIL MOVIE that treats corrective rape like isn’t a big deal and then has a happy ending as if it didn’t even happen and it’s all fine because they had a baby” and i’m like…. well i first of all don’t think it had a happy ending, actually. i think it is a story about characters and the decisions they make and have to live with. i think if your take on the ending was that the movie was saying “yay it’s all okay because they are a happy family” you were not thinking very much about the movie you were watching. i think the movie is saying that THESE CHARACTERS feel that their duty to their parents to carry on a specific type of family is the most important thing to them. and it is asking you to SIT WITH THAT and THINK ABOUT IT. is everything they all went through worth it? the strain on their relationships? corrective rape and the aftermath of it?? is it worth it?? because wai-tung has a biological child with a woman he is technically legally married to?? he feels that it is! how do YOU feel about him feeling that way??? engage with the art don’t just write it off as being evil and problematic because a bad thing happened in it
aspiring writers, i am begging you to go to your local community meetings. inspiration will find you. you will not have a good time, but the man who manages to wrap a regular conversation to the time he drank e. coli [NOT the food poisoning strain that kills. and it tasted nasty you guys just wouldn't understand. bc you didn't drink it, losers.] deserves to be commemorated.
My favorite book read in March so far! You wanna know why?!!!
First of all, both the author and the main character are Chinese
Plus, we also have a black woman and a Mexican man main characters
Interracial relationships!
It is genuinely funny! There was several instances in which I giggled out loud.
Girls looking out for each other!!! Girls supporting girls!
Girls rescuing themselves, but boys being there to support them when they need it.
Slow burn romance, the best kind.
It’s just beautiful *wipes tears.
“You ever think about the noose?”
She snorts, then glances at me, though her fingers don’t lose their rhythm. “I’ve been thinking about the noose since I was born. You know, sometimes they use thirteen loops in the hangman’s knot. That makes it go easy. Six or seven gets the job done, too, if it’s a hemp. Any less and you got you’self some powerful kicking to do when you swing.”
-Stacey Lee, Under a Painted Sky
“She’s not wild, she’s spirited. ‘Wild’ means 'I have no care about I do.’ But 'spirited’ means, 'I love what I do.’ Big difference.”
— Stacey Lee, “Under a Painted Sky”

“And the view at the top was so wide, and the outlook so handsome.”
— Stacey Lee, from Under a Painted Sky
i am a slut for "thing that was a silly joke in the beginning of the story is later recontextualized as actually kind of fucked up" . especially when its a longrunning series and you can tell its a product of the author re-assessing the writing of their younger self. chefs kiss.
