like. why spend the whole movie insisting killing will tarnish a soul only for Kara to kill the guy, implying that her soul is already tarnished?? why gloss over the true atrocities and multiple genocides that make up the core theme of the book?? why take away all of the instances of Kara treating grieving people with understanding and compassion in the face of unimaginable horror?? why turn to an (admittedly fun) #girlpower moment and have Kara slit his throat which was sure, momentarily satisfying but COMPLETELY missed the point of the comic, which is that grief and trauma and rage are intense and all-consuming and that it takes enormous strength of will to continue forward despite it all, and an even more massive inner strength to choose to continually choose kindness. That’s Kara as a character! that’s why she’s the fucking best! Like, we have this beautiful summation of how her intense trauma shaped her into someone who feels immense pain all of the time and yet is an equally immense force for good. And we have that iconic fucking panel where she’s sitting all bloody and exhausted at the end of the comic and truly realizes that violence is not going to solve her pain. and like sure, maybe the phantom zone imprisonment would be too complicated to show in a movie and also I kind of wanted him to die, I do not care that they killed Krem like morally or even narratively in the movie specifically but it just. like. it was a fine movie. It was a power fantasy. But Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow the comic is super not a power fantasy; instead, it’s a fucking thoughtful meditation on grief and loss and trauma with strong undeniable themes of genocide and how a person can possibly continue after understanding the horrors of the world. It’s also about two girls who understand each others’ pain and make the mutual decision to not let it totally define them. I love it. It means a lot to me. The power fantasy was fun too, I guess. The dialogue was bad and the pacing was off, but the soundtrack was pretty good.
