Tai Chi? Did you mean tai ji quan?
When the term Tai Chi is used in the United States, it almost certainly refers to the practice of tai ji quan (pronounced tai zhee chuan). I use the proper form throughout this site. Learn about this misnomer at http://flowingzen.com/7966/tai-chi-qi-gong-and-chai-tea/
Benefits of tai ji quan
Millions of people practicing tai ji quan over the last 5000 years cannot be wrong - if you commit to it for an extended period of regular practice, you will likely see improvements in your health.
Here's what you might expect:
Better posture
Better blood circulation
Better muscle tone and strength
Better flexibility
Better resilience to common bugs (e.g. cold)
Better sleep
More confidence in handling the challenges of life
More inner peace
More positive outlook on life
Better eye sight (with special exercises)
Disappearance of pains and even remission of diseases (read more at http://flowingzen.com/9287/what-we-can-and-cant-heal/)
Your first (FREE) class
I'd like you to experience tai ji quan for yourself. You have two options: schedule a private lesson, or check the schedule and come for a FREE beginner's group lesson. In fact, come to 3 of my lessons for free, to get into the groove of things.
Wear comfortable loose clothing that does not restrict breathing, arm or leg movement, and read the safety tips posted below.Β You will probably want to get shoes such as these if you decide to continue practicing. Meanwhile, sneakers will work. Come 10 minutes before the posted time so we can get acquainted.
Consider establishing your baseline measurements before your first class (for tracking your progress). Printable sheet and reasons for doing this.
What exacly will I be learning?
We will be practicing The 18 Luohan Hands and The 24-Pattern Form. Both sets are among the most well known in the world. Actually, only the second set is considered tai ji quan, while the first set is used to get our energies flowing (and is part of Qi Dong practice)

Membership is $99 a month and includes unlimited classes. It is advisable to practice tai ji quan at least once a day to experience the benefits.
You may make a payment (or set up a recurring payment) online using a card (card processor charges me a smaller fee for debit cards, but credit cards are ok too). You can also bring cash or credit card with you to a class (handled after class).

Classes have not started yet. Schedule will be posted soon

Safety
Practicing tai ji quan is relatively safe compared to most other sports and exercise programs, and is accessible to people of all ages. The goal of tai ji quan is to improve your health, so let's not do anything that will slow your progress.
Here are a few points for staying safe while practicing:
Bring a drink - stay well hydrated
Always breathe - do not hold your breath
Take care of your knees. There are a lot of squatting positions in tai ji quan. The only way to keep the knees safe is to have strong muscles surrounding them. Do not go beyond your level of comfort. As your muscles become stronger, your level of comfort will widen and you will be able to go lower
Do not let knees go over the tips of your toes
Never turn foot when knee is bent and body weight is on the same leg. Transfer weight to the other leg first, then turn your foot.
Do not practice when very hungry or after a filling meal
Don't continue doing any movement that is painful or causes you discomfort. Relaxation is key. You won't be able to relax if not comfortable. Plus, you are risking further damage to your problem area (be patient and improvements will happen)
Be responsible for yourself and know your limitations. If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness, stop immediately and let the instructor know. It is ok to interrupt the class. Your well-being is much more important
Make sure that the instructor has your emergency contact information and is aware of your relevant medical conditions
Bring your insurance card, and your "survival kit" (e.g. some candy if diabetic)
Consult your doctor if you have concerns whether tai ji quan is appropriate for you
Refer a friend and get a private lesson
I would like to thank you for spreading the word. Simply bring a friend who signs up for a membership, and a private lesson is on me.
If you have joint pain
If you have joint pains, grains (pastas, breads) are a likely part of the cause. Phytic acid contained in grains (also, legumes and nuts) prevents minerals (think calcium) absorption by the body. All that calcium in milk goes down the drain if you have it with a cereal. Read more at http://www.marksdailyapple.com/nuts-and-phytic-acid/ Consider reducing your grain consumption, or in case of nuts, soaking them. On a different note, glucosamine chondroitin msm (a dietary supplement) does work amazingly well at revitalizing the joints and eliminating pains (personal experience).
