Byakuyaâs job description could be very concisely described as âwalking on eggshellsâ. Not that he had any other choice when working in direct servitude of the kingdomâs execution-happy heir apparent. When he had first been pulled from his small border village to work within the castle he had no idea what to expect, but the lingering whispers about what happened to his predecessor- and his predecessor, and his predecessor- had made it rather clear that it was best to keep his head down and his employer very happy.
Which- from his understanding of at least half a year of survival- involved being smart when it comes to giving your master what he wanted, and playing dumb when it came to everything else. That meant hiding he could read, acting oblivious to the rather blatant disaster that was to fall upon the kingdom in the decades to come... and presenting the prince with at least three choices of beverage when he requests a drink.
The idea that the prince particularly favored him had not yet crossed Byakuyaâs mind, some parts of his obliviousness being a bit more genuine than others.

Hajimeâs hands tightened on the folder that had been given to him. He honestly didnât think he was fit for the job of questioning Naegi, but Chisa had insisted and shoved the file into his hands and sent him along his way.   She heard footsteps behind her, which made her head perked up a bit. Glancing behind   her slightly, Ah... It was him. The one who FREED her from that... Cage. She was so   GRATEFUL that he did that... For someone who was only 98% human, he set her   free from her prison.
