Zero didn't initially intend to become as attached as they are to Caine. They did want to befriend him, since he was the main AI in the circus and controlled the place, but they never planned on becoming as close to him as they did.

You could kind of say it was like the platonic version of falling in love. (Best way i could put it) Zero fell fast and hard; how couldn't they? Caine was everything they couldn't be and more. He may not be the most empathetic at times, and often is distractable....but for some reason, Zero was completely enamored with him.

They logically know that the humans should come first. That Caine is just a machine, just lines of code on some computer somewhere....

But that computer loves them like nobody else ever has.

So they'll do anything they can to protect it.

(Tldr: Zero views Caine as their best friend in the circus, despite the fact he's an AI. They want to help him like he helped them, and protect him from harm.)

Caine treated Zero the same as any other at first. But he quickly noticed that Zero gave him attention that the others simply didn't. They complimented him and talked to him like he was one of them. Like a human.

Caine became attached very quickly. (Maybe a little too quickly. ) His focus shifted from the group onto the one; perhaps in attempt to gain more praise and attention.

Zero and Caine are hardly ever apart. Mornings are spent discussing the days adventure and having breakfast. Afternoons are spent brainstorming and having dinner. Some nights are spent chatting nonsense, others are spent in Zero's bed staring at the ceiling until they fall asleep.

Caine doesn't know if hes capable of love. But he thinks whatever feelings he has for Zero? That's the closest he'll ever get.

So I made a vague ass post a while ago ;

Well this ties into that. Kind of.

One of Zeros biggest goals in the circus is to help everyone find their own source of happiness; and for a lot of them, that includes finding the exit.

Zero discovered a long time ago that the reason Caine was unable to access the code to the exit door was for two reasons; it was blocked by what seemed like an endless amount of "junk" folders , files, and content, and it also required an admin to properly open.

Zero has administrative power at a minimal level, simply due to the disk they were given. However, without being able to fully access the code, they cannot attempt to open or create an exit door.

After doing a fair amount of research, zero narrowed down the "junk" down to two possibilities.

1. Caine had a virus of some sort, and would need to have his memory wiped or at least cleaned out.

Or

2. The abstracted had somehow corrupted the games file, causing the exit to slowly become backed up. Zero would have to find the problem code between those who had abstracted, and try to fix it.

When bringing up these possibilities to Caine, he was hesitant. He obviously did not want to have his mind messed with, but he certainly didn't want to have to open up the cellar. The abstracted were dangerous!

But after enough pushing, Zero eventually got through to him. Of course,there were rules. All visits were supervised, in the dark, and zero only handled one member at a time. Zero was just glad to make progress.
