“You’re Fei,” Aranel addressed the beast. “You’re Zenyra’s friend.”
At Zenyra’s name, the megarya raised its head, eyes darting around the grotto as it strained against its chains. Meizan slashed them with his sword, and the creature soared forth at once. It leaped across the pool in graceful arcs and sniffed the walls frantically with its snout.
“It’s looking for her,” Meizan said in disbelief. “After she kept it imprisoned for all these years, it still wants to be with her.”
“The megarya are intelligent creatures, and Zenyra stated the blood was a gift,” Aranel said. “I expect the shields around Incaraz were also maintained with the help of Fei’s chitrons. Do you think it’s possible that it willingly—”
“Let her enslave it for years and suck its blood dry?” Meizan crossed his arms.
“But the megarya are said to be the noblest of all beasts.”
“Nothing is that noble.”
“But if it were for a greater cause—”
“She took advantage of it, Aranel!” Meizan glowered at him. “She abused its loyalty.”
