That’s not what Ton said. What he said was that Tadano was on another level than them, he didn’t need to convince himself that life is worth living. But for the common salary workers, life can be long and boring and sometimes you need an anchor to give yourself a reason to keep living. In Ton’s case, that anchor was his wife and family. 

He was encouraging Retsuko to find her anchor. To not give up her dreams for the ideals of someone else. 

Now, I don’t think Retsuko wanting to get married was out of nowhere. In the first season she realized it’s something she wanted, first to be able to quit her job, but when she met Resasuke it turned into a proper wish. She just wanted to be with him. 

Her rejection to her mom’s attempt to engage her with someone was because she didn’t want to be paired up; she wanted to meet someone on her own and fall in love in love first. She wanted it to be her choice.

yes! as much as the written languages help express and convey our thoughts, there will never be anything created that can truly express everything that can be felt in its full complex depth. 

such is why xenogenders are interesting from a linguistic standpoint; it is the new creation of words and phrases in order to show something that never was able to be expressed before in written words. it’s our generation struggling and coping with a language that never grew past the binary and is only barely grasping the idea of things outside of the binary. it’s fascinating.

also, some things simply just aren’t meant to be intellectualized. even if i met a demiboy or a male-aligned nonbinary person (which i am), i’m sure we experience gender in completely different ways. our own concept and feelings are too wide, too complex, too unique to be placed into human conception with just a couple of words.

sometimes, things just are meant to exist. there’s no need to fumble and look for labels and boxes. they can surely be comforting, but enveloping yourself with labels and worrying about whether they truly express your own unique identity is exhausting and oftentimes a means to an impossible end.

I do still think of Powered from time to time, mostly fondly. In fact, I recently went back and reread a big chunk of the first story, for nostalgia value (the flaws are, in hindsight, much more glaring; but I still enjoyed it). I learned a lot from writing that series, and it shows, in both good ways and bad :P

Still, I don’t know that I’d call it an “epilogue” to anything except maybe my own time in the fandom. Many people had already moved on to greener pastures before I even started writing it, and many haven’t left to this day, and many have joined! It’s still a somewhat active fandom, just ... not in the tiny corner of the internet that I occupy. I would be surprised if Powered held a level of significance for anybody beyond just “it was a fun story and I enjoyed it,” honestly.

But yes, it’s still kind of a part of how I process the world, although in a much more peripheral capacity than it was when I was writing it. Mostly it’s just in the sense of “What worked and what didn’t, and how do I take the things that worked and apply them to future projects?”

And yeah, people can be pretty alarming when confronted with this stuff. I’ve said it before, that this blog is pretty overwhelmingly pessimistic only because Tumblr is the only place where anyone can talk about this without getting actively muzzled. There’s no sense in balancing things out here because “positivity” reigns everywhere else. What the mods won’t censor, the users will do themselves. Even if what you have to say is extremely reasonable.
