The black-haired fellow leaned his chair back on two legs, peering at the elves moving around the bar. Â "What about the redhead?â he asked, sotto voce.
His table partner leaned over to see who he was looking at. Â âThe red -- oh no, noâ she replied, blond curls shaking. Â âHeâs taken. Â Heâs chatting up that magistrix, see?â
âPfft. Â Youâre prettier. Â Just walk up and --â
âWhat? Â No.â
â-- say something like Hi, my nameâs Cear --â
âNo.â
â-- your pants, my Hand of Freedom, what do you say --â
She burst out laughing and had to cover her mouth. âZavy, no!â
âWhy not?â
âI canât! Â Look -- look, you like him so much, you go ask him out.â
âNah, heâs not Kiraâs type. Â If Kira liked sharing, which he doesnât. Â Iâm just here for the eye candy, babe. Â And to help you out, of course.â
âI donât need help,â Cearalaith laughed.
Zavyrian smiled. Â âWell, youâre getting it anyway. Â I canât let all this charm just go to waste. Â But okay, fine. Â What about that one over there -- the lady in crimson and gold.â
âCrimson and gold?  Zavy, thatâs half the elves in this bar.â Cearalaith twisted up her lips doubtfully, even as she turned in her seat to take a look.  âAnd lady?  Iâm not really into -- I mean, Iâve never actually -- well, there was that once, but....â  Her eyes found the woman in question, and she blinked.  â...oh.âÂ
Zavyrian grinned, leaning forward. Â âOh?â
Cearalaith blushed.
"Oh???â
She turned around and set stony green eyes on him. Â âOkay, I need your help,â she said softly. Â âAnd it had better be better than Hand of bloody Freedom.â

Can we handwave biology and do Kira/Zavy for the kid thing? ._.
After a hilarious adventure involving TransmorphicTincture and MAGIC Â because whythe fuck not (and probably dragons, letâs be real here):
NAME: Elessa Straylight-Firewing
GENDER: Female.
GENERALAPPEARANCE: Elessa has Zavyâs midnight hair and devil-may-care grin, butthe rest of her is all Kiravel. Â Soft-spoken, slightand graceful of build, with killer eyelashes, slender ears and a perpetually deviousglint in her eyes. Â Thank the light she doesnâtget Zavyâs nose â he wears it well enough, but it would be awful on a girl. Â
PERSONALITY: Elessainherited the romantic tendencies of both of her parents, and is much given todaydreams and whimsy (much to the consternation of her teachers throughout heracademic career). Â She is passionate, brave and at turns very cautious and heedlessly reckless. Â She loves and hates with equal fervor.
SPECIAL TALENTS: Givenher parentsâ inclinations, itâs no surprise that Elessa is skilled with magicâ however, it is her linguistic skill which really shines and sets herapart. Â As a child she picked up newlanguages quickly and would seek to learn obscure/dead languages for fun, and as a teenager/young adultshe joins several Reliquary expeditions as a translator in order to further herstudies. Â Life as an archaeologist doesnot suit her, however, and eventually she returns to the cities to work withmajor universities in their language departments. Â Her work takes her across national andfaction borders and at times she is even welcomed as an honored diplomat inAlliance territory by colleagues in her field.
WHO THEY LIKEBETTER: Both of her fathers are dedicated parents, and she loves them bothdearly. Â That said, Zavy edges ahead forbeing a little more adventurous, and thus a little more fun.
WHO THEY TAKEAFTER MORE: Kiravel. Â While flashesof Zavyâs influence can be seen here and there, Kiravel is everywhere in theirdaughter â her posture, her thoughtful analysis, her delicate grace. Â
PERSONALHEADCANON: Zavyrian insists on the last name order because it scans better. Elessaâs birth does prompt a reconciliation of sorts betweenZavyrian and his parents â his mother, in particular, is not going to be shutaway from her grandchild, and Zavyand his dad are compelled to make some kind of peace.  Kiravel is the one who teaches Elessa how todo her hair and makeup (Zavy tries, but heâs only ever done theatre makeup, andKira has to fix it before Elessa goes out looking like a clown.) Â
7. Whatâs a negative thing about your character that you enjoy writing?
Gosh, so many. Â Hereâs two separate examples:
In Monsterhearts, I really enjoy playing up what a nasty kid Riley is.  I love RPing his selfishness, his condescension, his antagonizing behavior, being overly defensive, kinda wicked, inflicting magical, psychological torment on people over really petty things⌠kids can be cruel, I donât play a lot of âevilâ characters, and it can be fun to write/RP like a sociopath SOMETIMES.  If this is your shtick in all games, no matter what the context, please just leave me alone.
In WoW, Kiraâs ugly side isnât something I celebrate like with Riley, but it is something Iâve written about at length. Â Heâs inherited such an awful legacy and been through so much, and some of that is definitely his own doing, but part of the reason why itâs satisfying is so I can do the whole âclawing his way outâ thing later. Â Of course, Zavyrian does a lot of that clawing himself, and if I wasnât playing with easierbythree and she didnât do such a great job of handling that material, I probably wouldnât do it. Â I mean, this is a character I wrote a fake suicide note for, in which he completely and logically justified his decision making based on the events of his life. Â Is it âfunâ to write? Â Not necessarily, but it does let me explore some darker sides of things and leads to good RP, as long as the involved parties are appropriately advised.
Midnight was for the warlocks, of course, and daybreak for the priests; the witching hour and the dawn of Light. But there are hours between which, if not specifically set aside for the poets or the wizards or the tinkerers, Zavyrian Firewing had more or less adopted for his own; hours after Kiravel had finally succumbed to fitful sleep, but before the working day commenced. Hours when he could be alone with his troubled thoughts.
It hurt, more than Zavyrian could put into words â to know that while he was leaving the house at the crack of dawn, laboring all day in the hot sun, and coming home after dark to barely make ends meet â going to bed early in preparation of doing it again the next day â that Kiravel was sneaking out to the Row behind Zavyâs back, taking students and bringing in gold to spend on bloodthistle and jewelry while Zavyrian despaired as to how to pay the rent and still put food on the table. To the Row. To Murder Row, the worst part of the city Kiravel had told Zavryian he would rather die than see again â the city which Kiravel had nearly killed them both to avoid seeing but a year ago.
It hurt even more to know that even if he had words, there was no way he could speak them. By the time Kiravel had confessed the deception, he was already over the bloodthistle â or so he said â but he was still too weak and disorganized of thought for Zavy to feel comfortable pressing him about it. When he presented Zavyrian with the ring, and Zavyrian had flinched with the thought of everything else that money could have bought, Kira nearly collapsed from the fear that Zavy might say no â and then Zavy couldnât say no. Not faced with that, not with Kiraâs happiness, Kiraâs health on the line. When every word was a potential dagger to his loverâs heart, Zavyrian wielded them with caution indeed.
Zavyrian bit his lip, twisting the ring again. It wasnât that he didnât want to say yes. But that wasnât how heâd wanted to say yes. He loved Kiravel, yes⌠but the Kiravel heâd known in Dalaran. The smug, strong, self-assured warlock who was his best friend. That was the man he could see himself spending the rest of his life with â that was the man to whom Zavyrian had considered proposing â not this trembling, whimpering, damaged shadow of an elf whoâd replaced him. For a year now heâd taken care of that shadow, comforted him, provided for him, pampered him, been patient with him, waited faithfully for the day the shadow would heal and his Kiravel would return again. And he had never complained. Never once. Sickness and health, right? Married or not, thatâs just what you do for a person you love. Right?
But that day had not come, and time had begun to chip away at Zavyrianâs confidence that it ever would.
His lip quivered in a way he never would have allowed in the light of day. Or inside that house, or ever in front of the man who slept soundly inside. âAm I making a mistake?â he asked the ring in his fingers.
No answer came, not from ring nor moon nor from anywhere in his heart, and that terrified him.
I was about to concede defeat on this one, because every time I tried to write I could not get past the mental image of Stavier literally belting âLETâS - GET DOWN - TO BUS-INESS!â while swinging his Special Edition Blood Knight Polearm artfully around and an impossibly wide-eyed, overwhelmed Zavyrian just clinging to his chair and staring at him helplessly, and I just dissolved into giggles and no writing would happen.
Then I realized Iâd read the prompt backwards. westelfirewing gave me a kick, and here you go.
âOkay, so⌠A, B, B, A, A, B, B, A.â
âRight! Thatâs the octave. Next youâve got the sestet, and youâve got choices there. You can go CDCDCD, or CDCCDC, or CDECDE, or ââ
âChoices?â From the too-small desk, the brawny young blood knight frowned up at the even younger mage.
âRight. Just donât end with a couplet â thatâs a different form. Which actually I like better, but for these purposes ââ
âHow many are there?â
Zavyrian blinked at his student. âHow many⌠choices? Forms?â He furrowed his brow. âWell, thereâs a lot, I mean ââ
Stavier put up a hand. âPoems, Zavyrian. How many poems are there.â
âHow many ââ Zavyrian stared at Stavier, incredulous. âThereâs⌠thereâs all the poems. As many as can be written. Thereâs poems that havenât even been thought of yet. Which is good â thatâs why weâre here, right?â Â
Stavier scowled and put his pencil down.
âWhat?â
âI just â I donât get this. Iâm never going to get this. This was a horrible idea.â
âNo, youâre going to get this, Stavier, come on. Youâre smart, man, you can do this.â Zavyrian hopped up on the blood knightâs desk, crossing his legs artfully as he did. âCome on. Itâs just patterns, just rhyme patterns. You can do this.â
Stavier exhaled slowly. âHow do I know which one to use?â
âYou use the one that feels best.â Zavy lightly pounded his own chest with his fist, over his heart. âThe one that sings to you. The one that takes your words and frames them like a picture, that showcases them best.â
âHow do I know which one that is?!â
âYou just do!â Zavyrian threw up his hands. Stavier hung his head, and Zavy couldnât help but feel kind of sorry for the guy. âYou⌠look, I really like the form I just gave you, because it sounds so cool when it works. And rhymes are pretty easy for it in Thalassian. But if youâre writing in Orcish â if Iâm writing in Orcish? I use a different one entirely. ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG. Still fourteen lines, you still have a turn in the middle, but itâs a totally different pattern â itâs got that couplet I just told you not to use â but itâs still a sonnet, and you get this really cheery rhythm that ââ
âNo. Fuck this. This is stupid.â Stavier shoved back from the desk. âNone of this makes sense. Your stupid patterns donât make sense.â He swept himself up to standing like an avalanche in reverse, his ire rising with him. âWhy do I have to rhyme at all? Why am I writing poems at all? This is fucking stupid!â He turned towards the door for only a second before whirling back and stabbing an accusatory finger at Zavyrian. âAnd why Iâm even listening to you while you prattle on about this shit ââ
âHEY!â Zavyrian snarled back, surprising even himself with the force in his voice. âYou had better listen to me, Luminiar! You are listening to me because you came to me for help. And because out of my own ridiculous generosity, I am helping you.  And why me? Well because on my end, itâs because Liealia loves you, and I want her to be happy â and on your end itâs because I am an epic success in the one area where you fucking fail: goddamned old-fashioned rose-tinted romance. I am the best teacher youâve got. Now weâve been through the beginnerâs classes â holidays, flowers, candy and footrubs â and now you are in Doctor Fucking Firewingâs Advanced Courses on listening to her feelings and motherfucking poetry, and you are in the home stretch and you are not fucking giving up now. So sit your ass down, soldier, pick up your pencil, and start thinking of what flower her eyes remind you of most.â
The two men glowered at each other for a long moment, Stavierâs face darkening dangerously, Zavyrian trying his damnedest not to flinch now that heâd spent all his bravery on one impassioned speech. Finally Stavier grabbed his chair forcefully, spun it around and sat back down.
âGood,â Zavyrian breathed. âGood. Now. Like I was saying⌠maybe the other form would be easier. We can start with that, and ââ
âYou didnât answer my question,â Stavier grumbled, so low Zavy almost missed it.
âWhat question?â
âWhy rhymes?â Stavier scrawled in a corner of his paper. âLots of poems donât rhyme. Why are we even bothering with this bullshit?â
Zavyrian sighed. âI know free verse seems like it would be easier⌠but without a framework, itâs really easy to fuck it up. You still need flow and feeling, and if you donât get it right then you donât have a poem, you just have garbage. A grocery list, at best. And yeah, done right that grocery list could, in turn, be poetry⌠but youâve gotta know the rules before you can break them. You know? Like⌠likeâŚâ Zavyrian trailed off, shrugging. âLikeâŚâ
âStreet brawling.â
Zavyrian blinked at Stavier. âStreet brawling,â the blood knight said again. âIf youâre fighting a guard, or someone trained⌠itâs most effective if you know going in what theyâve been trained to do. Otherwise youâre just flailing aimlessly. And you look like an idiot, and you lose.â
Slowly Zavyrian nodded. âYeah,â he said, with no small measure of relief. âYeah. We can work with that.â

Kira on Zavy: "You've got the whole weight of the world on your shoulders, always trying to do everything on your own. You promised to share our lives together... that includes the burdens!"
"Well, someone's gotta do it... and you've not been in a state. Â When you're better, we'll talk." Â There is nothing but affection in the tone.
Then there was the day that Semyaza was on his way from one place to another in Silvermoon, and he heard his mentorâs name called.
When he turned, he did not see Kiravel, but rather two dark-haired elves engaged in heated discussion. One had a few more lines by his eyes, and a few grey hairs in his short beard. He was shouting something about how you go and take off, you vanish, you take up with that bloody Straylight boy, and now you come asking for MY help?
The younger fellow â well built, but looking a bit underfed â ran his hand through his short locks and sighed. âLook, Iâm sorry, I ââ
âSorry?! Sorry!? Your motherâs been worried sick about you since Dalaran and youâre bloody sorry?!â
âDad, thereâs been complications ââ
âBoy, I am not interested in your complications. I could not give less of a fuck about your complications.â
âDad, Iâm sorry, I ââ
âCome home, Zavyrian.â
The younger man â Zavyrian â blinked at the elder. âWhat?â
âCome. Home.  You know this isnât going to last. You know how this is going to end â you know how his family ended. You donât have to let him drag you down with him.â
âDad, no, stop. Leave Kira out of this.â
âHow can I leave him out of this? When heâs done this to you?â
âHe didnât do anything to me!â Zavyrian snapped.
âCome home. Your mother misses you. Your sisters. Everything can be as it was.  Your mother keeps talking about this nice girl â I know a fellow looking for an intern at the Spire ââ
âNo, Dad. Stop it.  Iâm not coming home!  Iâm not living your fucking life!â
âYou know, most Firewings get cut off when they come of age.  Iâve already been extraordinarily generous with you, Zavyrian, and time and fucking again youâve thrown it in my face.  But now you want my help? Youâve got to give me something in return. Come home, Zavyrian.â
Zavyrian stared at the ground. âNo, Dad.â
The elder man stared at the younger. âNo?â
âNo.â
The father sighed and shoved his hands in his pockets. ââŚwell, then,â he said finally. âThatâs that.â Something in the finality of his tone indicated that this was not the first time theyâd had this discussion, but maybe it was going to be the last.
âYeah.â
There was another long silence. âYouâre making a mistake.â
The young man stood quietly.
âWrite your mother. But donât come asking me for anything else. You understand?â
Zavyrian closed his eyes, as the elder man turned and walked away.
You, you who has smiled when youâre in pain You who have smiled through the profane They were distracted and shut down So why, why would you talk to me at all? Such words were dishonorable and in vain Their promise as solid as the fog And where was your watchman then?
Iâll be your keeper for life as your guardian Iâll be your warrior of care, your first warden Iâll be your angel on call, Iâll be on demand The greatest honor of all, as your guardian -- âGuardian,â Alanis Morrissette
If this world is wearing thin, And youâre thinking of escape Iâll go anywhere with you Just wrap me up in chains But if you try to go alone, Donât think Iâll understand -- âStay,â Shakespeareâs Sister
But itâs better to watch the scenery change at a comatose rate Than to put yourself in it and turn into one of those cigarette ads that you hate ⌠But still no one can stare at the wall as good as you, my baby doll And youâre aces for playing along â youâre almost human, even now And just âcause they call themselves experts it doesnât mean sweet fuckall Theyâve got the permanent press, and homes with a stable address And theyâve got excitement, and life by the fistful But youâve got the needle. I guess thatâs the point of it all. -- âThe Point of It Allâ, Amanda Palmer
