Claude Monet “The Voorzaan and the Westerhem” 1871 Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Windmills turning in the wind, boats, brightly coloured houses, huge cloud-filled skies with a mere strip of meadowland beneath them: that is the classical image of the Zaan Region. The French painter Claude Monet was fascinated by it. He spent four months in Zaandam in 1871, where he made 25 paintings and 9 sketches. One of these paintings is included in our permanent collection: “The Voorzaan and the Westerhem.” The other works are part of various other private and museum collections dispersed all over the world. In Zaandam, Monet experimented with painting in series, in which he aimed to capture the reflection of the light. The Voorzaan and the Westerhem were painted three times by Monet, in which there are striking differences between each of these versions. This period formed the basis the sketch-based impressionist work for which Monet would later become world-famous. (This writeup is taken from the description at museum.)
