Hidden around a corner stood this figure, solid yet ethereal. I was immediately drawn to it.

It's interesting how it uses a visual language that fits mostly in 2D art, here translated to the 3D world. What I also like is the title, the diminutive form giving it something soft and endearing. I really love it.

The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is a Uptown Charlotte-based museum that was opened to the general public on January 2, 2010, and the dignitaries were former Charlotte mayor Anthony Fox and Andreas Bechtler. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is an art heaven to people of art and art critics because of its extensive collection of masterpieces as well as because of its stunning architecture, which was designed by a Swiss architect called Mario Botta. The museum contains the wonderful personal collection of works of art covering a number of decades of artistic activity. The institution was named in honour of the Bechtler family, who donated their precious pieces of art to the people and have made it a popular place among both art lovers and tourists. The architect of Switzerland and Italy designed such a construction that is not only a vessel but an art piece on its own. The terracotta tiles applied on the exterior allude to the classic architecture of Charlotte, but still have a very modern nature. The abundance of natural light in galleries through large windows provides viewers with exciting conditions of dynamic interaction throughout the day. The small size of the building ensures that it makes maximum gallery space with minimal overshading to the urban environment. Internally, there are well-balanced rooms that guide visitors in an intimate experience with art. The spaces were engineered in such a way that they moved at a natural rhythm by Botta, creating viewing and reflection rhythms. The staircase is placed in the middle, and it is a sculpture where one can explore this part at many levels. This well-made design makes sure that the building does not take away or distract from the artistic experience, but is a pure example of how architecture and art can harmonise with each other.

The installation by Jean Tinguely in the Bechtler Art Museum demonstrates his interest in motion and machines. His kinetic sculpture is constructed of metal components that are joined together in a childish-complicated manner and, in most cases, are rough and industrial. The shifting components refute the concept of inert art and encourage the audience to witness transition as it happens. The photography policies permit personal recording, but at the same time, maintenance of the artworks. Regardless of whether you are an ardent art lover or a person who may be interested in knowing more about contemporary creativity, the Bechtler Museum can offer you a pleasant experience that may alter your perception of the surrounding world and change it forever.

At the Station Raafat Ballan 2022

Even without the title, this work manages to evoke an image of someone waiting at a station, which is fascinating considering how much is left open. There are catenary lines and a rail signal, but the rest of the scene is ambiguous. A large part of the work is covered by a yellow zone, while there are no rails, no platforms, or any other pieces that create a recognisable space.

This does seem to be exactly Ballan's point. Much of his work is about anonymous persons, not representing someone in particular but just a type of interaction. This scene also manages to tap into a common memory by how nondescript it is.

Next to this, I think the colour use is gorgeous. The greys and reds play wonderfully together, while the black ground layer has very unifying effect.

De Luistervink 1657 Nicolaes Maes

The Baroque is generally an area I focus less on, but when I first saw work of Maes it felt special. His works often have particularly rich shades of red, and have a very soft quality to it.

This work is a joy to unpack. In the centre, a maid invites us to watch the other maid standing in the hallway. As she is occupied by a suitor, the cat at the right has free rein to steal food, while the company at the top left is wondering when their refills are arriving. Together with the beautiful rendering of the spaces in the house, it is a captivating scene.

I’ve been bouncing a concept around in my head to actually put this blog to proper use. I love visiting museums, and to get more out of it I want to document what I see here. It encourages me to put my thoughts into words, improving both my skills in observing and writing, and linking the two together.

As I like items in neat series, I want to put these blogs in a very fixed format. Each entry should have four works, each with the core information, a square picture of the work, and my experience in concise written form.

Today feels like the start of a project, with the scope being unsure. Maybe this will end up with a single post, but I do hope I can continue with this for a long time.

Tuin met beeld in de sneeuw 1940 Charley Toorop

There is intrinsically something peculiar about an artwork depicting another artwork. It could either try to document it as accurately as possible, or transform it. I’m not sure what approach Toorop has taken with this work; I think it could be both.

It’s not just the subject that drew me to this piece. I really appreciated the limited palette, with similar colours reappearing throughout the work, like the reds, yellows, and greys. The snowy scene feels tranquil, while the turned away statue adds some tension as it makes you want to look at it from a different location, either facing it or seeing through its eyes.

For my artwork that I went to visit at the museum, I picked "Pushback" by Christina Lei Rodriguez. I personally enjoyed this type of art because I find it chaotic, very emotional, and expressive in its form of application. I like how the artist used common found materials such as glue ink, dry leaves, glass, crystals, pearls, grout. All of these materials are coincidentally related to the project of "The everyday monuments" and its something that we will often no think of collaging together into a beautiful art-work.

Additionally, the use of ink also related back to the first project we did which was pen no paper, in which I personally decided to utilize fabric for such function. I can appreciate how disorderly organizing and calculated the piece is, and how the collision of all of these elements come together to create a piece that resembles something from nature in this case being the sea, and it's natural state of motion it is a calming peace that gives a lot of thought into what we consider art and how we choose to portray it.

To me this piece means almost like a sea of emotions, clashing together in a beautiful manner, and creating a sound and profound collected masterpiece almost as a resemblance of there is beauty in everything, and anything can be made into something positive into something impactful. That the use of these products would probably be discarded after a certain point, and utilizing them to make something brand new and fresh to showcase that it can still be given a second chance, further proves the point that the art is trying make.
