Let This Banana Speak About Her Forgotten Childhood: YuYu Hakusho
When I entered third grade, this anime was introduced in our country, the Philippines. It was known as Ghost Fighter. Before the Koreanovela Invasion and during the highlight of Spanish Telenovelas, the TV station IBC-13 replaced their Japanese names into local ones, as they did to the title itself, so kids at that time, including me, thought that was the title of the show... But barely a month before it was aired, I have already encountered a fanart (and I din't even have an idea what fanart is before internet messed up my mind) of Yusuke Urameshi in the back cover of a children's local comic book. It never occured to me that I'll be fated to watch this show and love this boy. It made my childhood so colorful for at least three years. It was once aired every Tuesday evening and then moved to every Wednesday, then I guess every Monday. I was so addicted to it that I even have to sneak to our neighbor just to watch it everytime my dad comes home early and prefers to watch local news. This anime made me also appreciate newspapers that made me land to our school paper club when the movie version of it (which turned out to be its second movie released in Japan) released in November 1997, which was close to my 12th birthday. Ironically, although it made a rerun in the same TV station, it never reached the end, as IBC-13 was notorious for anime and even tokusatsu reruns without finishing it. Until the next year, it ceased to air. When GMA-7 acquired the rights to rerun the series during my sixth grade, it almost freaked me out with joy that it gave me the damn motivation to excel at school! And thus, the said network made a mark in television after the successful rerun of Voltes V, calling it the Golden Era of Anime in the Philippines. Several reruns happened after that and the fact that GMA finally finished all the 112 episodes of it made me so contented, and it's not just me. Kids and adults alike were discussing -- in schools, in their offices, in public transportations -- on who will win the Dark Tournament, their thoughts about Sensui's twisted mind, or anything YYH like it's more important than talking about the country's economy or current events. It was a nationwide phenomenon that lasted two to three years. Several parodies were made as well. Seriously, as in YYH actually invaded the Philippines, just as Saint Seiya invaded Latin America. Those were le good ol' days. To be honest, I have lost interest in the series for a bit as I grow up -- until just this week when I revisited the pics and merchs again. It's like Celine Dion's song played in my mind after seeing them like fuck, I freakin' miss these boys. And then there's a petition for this great series to be rebooted like Sailor Moon and HunterXHunter after seeing the latest artwork, so rare that I only saw them here. But it was saddening to find out that this is actually one of the underrated series anime fans of today have taken for granted. Fans nowadays, IMHO, are only hooked for what is the most popular right now and what has the best animation, art, and only a few will care for the story itself. If they will just see how great 90's animes were, they will definitely say that they have taken things for granted. No offense, but I seldom watch new anime right now because there are themes which they have been too mainstream because of public appeal, and since then I've been hunting for something rare or never occured in a typical show. The 90's has been great for anime, especially YYH. And I thank that old comic book for ruining my childhood, and now it's ruining my quiet mind again. Damn you, Yusuke, why does it have to be YOU!? Oh yeah, thanks to you too, Tumblr, for ruining me. Again. You never fail to do that. Now I have to stare at his hotness every hour every scroll while waiting fornever for a possible reboot, IF there will be one. Back to our regular programming.
