Yule Queen 👑💚
Saint Nick ❤️🎁
So I was talking about Nevermoor with a friend, right? And he hasn’t read the books but I was trying to explain some of the lore to him and I brought up that Christmas is celebrated in the books, and it hit me how weird that is.
Like first off, Christianity isn’t a thing in this universe, so already the whole origin of how it came to be is completely up in the air.
Secondly, we’ve got what I’ve been calling the Santa Problem, which is basically a bunch of problems in a festive-themed trench coat.
Firstly, the origin of Santa and the Yule Queen. In Hollowpox, we learn that Santa Claus and the Yule Queen ( Nicholas and Stelaria respectively) are regular mortals who studied at Wunsoc and learned some of the Wundrous Arts - and there are two things this could mean.
1) The idea of Santa Claus and the Yule Queen has only existed for as long as these guys have been doing it. We don’t know their ages, but considering the fact that it takes decades to learn a Wundrous Art to the extent that they did, they’re probably pretty old. We also learn in Hollowpox that Wundersmiths can live 100+ years, which has me wondering if even just learning a Wundrous Art as a normal person is enough to extend your life. But even taking that into consideration, Santa and the Yule Queen couldn’t have been around doing their thing even one hundred years ago, so if this theory is true, they must be a relatively new thing in this universe.
2) The idea of Santa Claus and the Yule Queen has always been a Thing, just like it is in our world. So they’d both be a part of the Christmas tradition, even if they weren’t thought to be real - that is until Nick and Stelaria came onto the scene.
Meaning that Nick and Stelaria either spent decades learning a highly difficult and stigmatised magical art, only to fuck off and invent a new Christmas tradition and become famous celebrities,
OR
they were both so fucking good at cosplay that they successfully convinced everyone in the Free State that Santa Claus was real.
imagine when hawthorne and mog find out cadence probably goes for Yule Queen.
Mog and Hawthorne: *collective gasp of betrayal*
Cadence: what, she has more style
