I'm finally done with the first draft of the Villager (Yttre) race for my Minecraft d&d worldscape project. It has two subraces Illager (Skovling) and Wandering Trader (Vanyttre). It's a highly religious and caste-based society that took the concept of "it takes a village" literally in child-rearing as wards have no parents and are raised by the church.
Those raised in the Yttre dogma have predetermined lives that suit their personality and skills and most are happy with this outcome as it means life remains easy and happy. Outsiders see it as too rigid and suppressing but if everyone plays their part, society operates efficiently and squabbles are solved quickly and peacefully. Though... there's something fishy going on with the upper castes and how much... liberty they've been allowed in recent decades.
Those who abandon the dogma are exiled as traitors and casteless. However, because Yttre are experts at loopholes that benefit them, there are exceptions to the casteless rule and the tenets of pacifism.
