Scarecrow: Year One Headcannon
Jonathan taught himself to sew as a child, mostly out of necessity. The Keeny family fortune had run dry long before he was born, and he had to be very resourceful as a result. Jonathan made his clothes last as long as possible by repairing and patching them up. It didn’t really bother him, because most of his clothes were already some from of hand-me-down. He did own a small amount of luxury attire, but that was for school and church only. Great Granny wanted him to be presentable while in public.
Otherwise, she didn’t really care if her great grandson was in shabby clothes. She felt that he deserved to look that way, unkempt and dirty. Much unlike herself, which is why she forced Jonathan to repair and maintain her various outfits along side his own. She’s a woman of wealth and by damn, she’ll look like it. In order to appease Great Granny’s demands, Jonathan spent a lot of his free time studying the art of sewing, learning new stitches and testing them out on his own clothes. When he repaired something for Great Granny, it had to be perfect. If it wasn’t, he risked another visit to the chapel.
He also knows how to crochet and knit, and uses those techniques for when he needs warmer clothing. Even though his childhood was riddled with anxiety, he’s thankful to have this knowledge as an adult. It helps when you can easily and quickly repair your burlap costume on the fly.
