Another few firsts:
the first time a grateful patient got me a coffee from the café
the first time a patient asked if I had office hours
the first back-to-back night shifts... I think I might be sleeping too much in preparation for this haha
the first time I messed up and wasted multiple peoples' time at once (whoops)
I'm so grateful that everyone is (generally) helpful and patient with all the little mistakes that first year doctors make.
Me: expects a 50%, gets a 90%.
Me that same day: expects an 85/90%, gets a 62%.
Why, UWorld, why? Do you enjoy this? Cause I sure as hell don't.
it’s been so hard to work on my hobbies these past four weeks… I really miss it — here’s a throwback picture
EM resident: who's your #1 priority?
Med student and I: *stare blankly*
Him: YOU. You are.
Us: ooooooh.
Him: you can't take care of your patients without taking care of yourself first.

I had the BEST shift two nights ago.
ALL the consultants were super nice. My attending even told me not to get used to it because that never happens.
My cases were medically complex, interesting, unusual.
Constant flow of patients but managed to keep everything straight (with the exception of one patient who had to wait 7 hours for their CT scan because she fell through the cracks).
Excellent support staff - vibing with the nurses and PCAs.
Helpful seniors who answered my multitude of questions with patience.
Sweet, grateful, patient patients.
Great attending with a sense of humor.
...and probably some other little tidbits I forgot...
Another first:
The first time I almost cried at work.
My superior lost his temper — because I messed up. I don’t blame him, but I also did feel that I was pushed outside my comfort zone in terms of competency. The patient… well, he turned out no worse for wear. But it was a shit day.
The whole point of EM is that you sign out your patients to the night team and can go home to rest.
I wonder though - I wonder if my work was correct, if the doc I signed out to found any mistakes, if my patients ended up being ok.
Did I casually text my coworker, "Hey how'd it go?" this morning? Yep. He didn't report any massive failings on my part, so that's a relief.
