Don't think.

It was so deceptively simple sounding. Something they had heard their father—no, creator—say as they crawled their way out of the abyss. As they climbed out of a tangled mess of broken limbs and cracked masks.

As they left one of their only kin to fall back into the darkness they, themselves had hardly clambered out of.

No, they couldn't think about that place, they shouldn't think. They needed to stop thinking. They weren't supposed to.

They glanced to something, anything to provide some form of distraction. For a minute, they found reprive in the lumaflies flittering in the lanterns overhead.

It hardly lasted as they found their mind wandering yet again. This time, to what it would feel like to contain something like that.

They had to imagine that it would feel odd. Like the strange feeling when their creator briefly forgot himself and talked to them as if they were his child. Or that one time their mother—always more of a mother, despite her efforts to maintain distance—had gently ruffled their hair in response to hearing that they had made great progress in their training.

"Vessel," their creator spoke up.

They made their way towards him without a second of hesitation, choosing to focus on their creator instead of the thoughts buzzing away in their mind.

Containing the heart of the infection was far worse than it had imagined containing the lumaflies to feel.

The cold chains wrapped tightly around its torso hardly did anything to distract from the burning within its chest, let alone that sickly sweet taste in the back of its throat.

God, that taste was potent. It would describe the flavor as if someone had brought blood and sugar to a melting point and poured it down its throat, if it had any real company to describe it to, anyways.

The only companion it had was in the form of the goddess it—along with its dark and barren prison—was made to contain. Even then, it knew better than to entertain her attempts at conversation... And yet, it found itself drawn to the ideas she fed it.

The idea that it had deserved a better life. The idea that it was unfair for everyone to ask this of it. The idea of family and connection.

The idea that it could have been loved.

It shook quietly as it tried to stifle the thoughts, as it tried to stop thinking. As the sickening taste of iron and sweetness crept out into its mouth and as the fire in its chest burned hotter and hotter, threatening to burn it from the inside.

It tried so desperately to keep the infection in, gritting its teeth and balling its fists. Any distraction it had wouldn't do anything to stop the agonizing pain as its porcelain features cracked from the building pressure.
