ylem
Ylem: according to theorists, the matter which composed the first physical substance at the beginning of the universe. Technically, the word specifically refers to the cloud of neutrons which eventually went from a dispersed gas to the elements we know today.
I really do like the idea that the word for the thing that things came from comes from somewhere. Although ylem was first used in this technical sense in a paper from the 1940s, it was adopted from a word with it's earliest roots in Aristotle's term πρώτη ὕληfor (prṓtē húlē, fundamental matter) when he proposed a similar theory a few thousand years ago.
The modern English is a revival of the Middle English yle, meaning “matter, fundamental matter of things as in the body,” this is itself a borrowing from the Latin hyle, a transliteration of the Ancient Greek ὕλη húlē. The original Greek also meant “material,” but with the connotation of building material; it could actually also be used to mean “wood, beams, firewood,” the things from which you might build a house where you would live, which in a sense isn’t too far from how we use it now, really.
Ylem is a term that was used by George Gamow, his student Ralph Alpher, and their associates in the late 1940s for a hypothetical original substance or condensed state of matter, which became subatomic particles and elements as we understand them today. The term ylem was actually resuscitated (it appears in Webster's Second as "the first substance from which the elements were supposed to have been formed") by Ralph Alpher.
