I understand that where you’re coming from is probably a place of distrust and pain. I get that, because I’ve been subjected to horrendous abuse and assault at the hands of cis men. I know also that you’re probably being hyperbolic, but I think it’s my duty as a person to question statements like these. (Ex philosophy and sociology student, I know- completely insufferable lmao.)
I mean this with kindness and love, but that statement is simply false.
If we’re looking at this anthropologically, and from the beginning of human ‘civilisation’, we’re looking at around 4000 to 3000BCE. This is around the time when humans began developing agriculture and domesticating cattle.
What this led to is more people grouping together to share resources, and the true concept of ‘ownership’ began.
Some believe that those who owned the land and cattle became the chiefs, who became the kings and queens, who became the politicians.
The fact is however that there’s not enough archeological evidence to support that gender played a significant role in the social order until much more recently in human history. Women partook in agriculture, were valued and revered members of their tribes- even Ancient Greek and Roman literature depict women working the fields, or working as shepherds etc.
The common theory so far is that patriarchy was developed solely by those who held power over their communities, and it was a way of ensuring their offspring retained that power after their death- deferring it to their sons, and restricting the sexual freedom of their culture’s women to make sure that the sons were legitimate.
Thus began the myth - that men are inherently stronger and more capable to lead than women are. It’s a pervasive ideology as we all know, but it’s also not worldwide. Anthropologists have identified that even today, there are over 160 matrilineal communities across the Americas, Asia and Africa.
The fact is that patriarchal men want you to believe that this has been happening since the dawn of time, it legitimises them as though gender is a simple fact of biology and not a complexly developed construct like race.
I think that point of view also helps to erase the intersectionality between gender and race, especially in modern society, where men of colour face extremely specific instances of prejudice and oppression because they are men, and because they are not white.
To say that men as a whole are oppressive is to say that it’s indicative of their nature. That old saying,
Which as we know, has been used to excuse any number of atrocities and negative behaviours. It’s something we have to actively fight against. We cannot allow that excuse anymore.
I think it also ignores the many instances in history where women have been entirely complicit in oppression and had power over men- For example, a well-off white woman in the American South post-slavery could have a black man killed for looking at her wrong.
Gender critical theory will always be a place of exhausting nuance. We have to examine our thought processes, even if what we believe ‘feels right’ based on our own experiences.
TERFS love to perpetuate that thought process, because they have a sense of victimhood. In their minds, women can’t submit sexually to a man- that’s abuse. Trans men are traitors to their gender and instantly become oppressors themselves. There’s no world to them in which women have any agency at all.
To clarify I’m not saying you’re a terf, I’m saying to beware of the insidious ways in which their ideas infect our communities because it appeals to our sense of justice.
