Got this new vape that lets me see through time. Started off cool but now it only shows me these cone shaped invertebrates that had an advanced civilization hundreds of millions of years ago. They're boring as hell.

H. P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Out of Time by Gou Tanabe
So, the story’s dissonant attitude toward the [Great Race of Yith], I feel, reflects Lovecraft’s own weird hodgepodge of attitudes about his society and its relationship with the rest of the world. He was extremely racist, but also denounced many of the atrocities that racism causes. He was a science enthusiast, but thought that technology and industry were destroying a traditional way of life that we were better off with. He was an avowed conservative and hater of change, and he was also a science fiction author who clearly spent a lot of time imagining new possibilities and alternative ways the world could be. So, the [Great Race of Yith] are a wish fulfillment race that does all the things he hates. Or, more likely, a race designed to be loathsome that he found himself growing fond of.
