The back of Ishizu’s knees made contact with the foot of the bed. As they parted for air, she allowed herself to be pushed back onto it. Kaiba rose and padded over to his coat which lay forgotten near the door. He picked it up and rummaged in one of the pockets, pulling out something wrapped in newspaper. He made his way back to the bed and sat beside Ishizu who was also now seated.

She took the neatly wrapped package and undid the red string. Pulling the paper aside, she found inside a golden eight-pointed star tree topper.

“I noticed your tree didn’t have one,” he said, gesturing towards the miniature one that stood in the corner by the window. She’d been here nearly a month now and had purchased it on a whim a week after she’d arrived in an effort to liven up the place.

“Thank you,” she said, with a surprised smile, sliding off her side of the bed to clip it atop the little faux fir. The soft white lights on the tree reflected in it surface. The only other light in the room came from the gap in the curtains.

Ishizu made her way to the window as something caught her eye. Peeking out, her curiosity turned to delight. Snow fell in a flurry; the first of the season. It was beginning to blanket the city below. “It’s snowing,” she announced. Kaiba came up beside her to have a look.

“I’d like to go out there,” she said. “Followed by a hot tea.”

He placed a hand on her lower back and she turned to face him. He kissed her gently. “Sounds like a plan.”
