I'm often imagining things like sociology papers that explore how media depictions of Islands, across many types of media, tie into imperial/colonial ideas of what an "island" is "for." i think about this w Risa from Star Trek and also the way dream islands work in animal crossing and pokopia. there are many examples. but those are the two that I can think of off the top of my head which fascinate me to rotate. an island is a place from which one extracts resources. those resources can be literal materials or the can be things like "relaxation" which must be made available on demand to certain types of people who necessarily come from off the island. you know.
I'm sure many such papers exist in some very specific academic field like postcolonial sociological media studies. or something. but not being in those spaces I must content myself with imagining them
