(VIA the Economist/NBCNews) London, UK. Citizens of London have elected their first Muslim mayor. Sadiq Khan, a son of a bus driver from Pakistan and human rights lawyer has beat conservative opponent and son of a billionaire, Zac Goldsmith. Sadiq Kahn would also be the first Muslim Mayor in any of the European Union countries. During the campaign, political commentators accused Goldsmith of using Trump-style politics to attack Mr. Khan. Goldsmith did not shy away from attacking his opponent based on his religion, ethnicity and his work as a human rights lawyer. In the weeks following the election according to NBCNews Goldsmith focused on Khan's "public appearances alongside radical Muslim speakers", he accused him of "giving platform, oxygen and cover to extremist". Interestingly enough Mr. Goldsmith has also appeared alongside so called "extremist". Other politicians in Goldsmiths party "condemned their party's swivel-eyes campaign." Others claimed the "outrageous campaign tactics" had done a real damage to their party. With the election now over Mayor Elect Kahn has received congratulations from leaders all over the world including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, in a tweet de Blasio said "Sending congratulations to London's new Mayor, and fellow affordable housing advocate, Sadiq Kahn.
