The MC of my story is Taiwanese and I was wondering about nicknames between family members. MC is Tsai Taoyang (蔡濤洋) and his sister is Tsai Huiyang (蔡惠洋). Is it weird or abnormal for them to call eachother Tao and Hui, respectively? And also are the names I chose clunky? I don't really know if it is weird to use the same last character for yang for both or if I should choose a different one for Huiyang (although i don't think I'll even put the hanzi in the piece).
Nicknames for Mandarin-speaking Siblings
It would be kind of weird, if only because in Mandarin-speaking Taiwanese families, most of the time they would use the terms “older/younger brother” (gege/didi) or “older/younger sister” (jiejie/meimei). (This is my personal experience, mind you: I’ve seen nicknames between family members when there are multiple siblings, so Taiwanese followers, feel free to weigh in.)
The names don’t sound clunky to me, and having a brother and sister with the same second character for their given names isn’t that uncommon, anyway. I think you’re fine on that front.
