Chapter 4
I awake in his bed, unsure of how I moved from the floor. I can only guess Caleb carried me over while I was asleep. I slowly sit up, noticing a dent in the comforter towards the foot of the bed. He was always like this, silent in his displays of affection. Trying to remain as quiet as possible, I slip out of bed and begin searching through his things, desperate to find a key or a way out. Yet, as I begin rummaging through his wardrobe and desk, I find there isnât anything there but the bare necessities. How can he be living like this?Â
Distracted in my search, I fail to hear the door creak on its hinges.
âFind anything, Princess?â his voice from behind startling me.
âOh, Astra! What are you doing here?â I ask, my heart hammering against my ribs.
âWell, I originally came here to invite you to breakfast,â he begins, closing the distance between us, âbuuut it looks like you are already preoccupied in my thingsâ he finishes with a cocky smirk.
âI- it is just-â I stutter.
âWhat? Cat got your tongue?â he teases as he closes the gap between us, leaning over the desk.
âIâm still upset with youâ I mumble, brushing past him.
âWhen you pout like that, you look exactly as you did when we were kids, Pipsqueakâ he says softly, a sense of longing in his voice. I quickly turn around at the nickname he rarely touched since he swore his Oath of Fealty to me, my irritation at him slowly waning.
âWell, we arenât kids anymore and you canât address me so casually whenever you pleaseâ I snap back, trying to internally distance myself as my heart begs to cave in.
âVery well, very wellâ he says casually as he lifts his arms in surrender. In that moment I catch a glimpse of a silver and red tassel on his sword.
âIs⌠thatâŚ?â I ask as I point towards his sword.
âYou thought Iâd go anywhere without it? Itâs my good luck charmâŚâ He pauses. âYouâre my good luck charmâŚâ
The room falls quiet for a long moment. Finally, I break the silence. âHow long are you going to continue keeping secrets from me?â
âPrincess, I just want to protect you.â he replies firmly.
âI can protect myself, Caleb. I really can-â
âWhat if Iâm the one you need to be wary ofâŚ?â he interrupts, his voice hesitating.
âI donât followâŚâ I murmur as I step towards him.
âWhat if Iâm not who you thought I was⌠or if I changed and became someone you hate? The things Iâve had to do... I donât want to hurt you.â He tries to speak confidently, but I can hear the fear under every word.
âI donât care.â I respond surely.
âPrincess, I donât believe you understood what I said-âÂ
âI. Donât. Care.â I repeat. âCaleb, who you were and who you are⌠youâre still my Caleb. You can hide parts of yourself or try to push me away, but that wonât alter anythingâÂ
I take a step towards him, but he takes one backwards in response.
âI care that youâre keeping secrets from me. I care that you keep pushing me away. I care that you keep pretending that youâre okay when youâre obviously not. But your past? Your mistakes?â I shake my head lightly, âyouâre my Caleb- the good, the bad, and the annoying.â
âIâm not that annoyingâ he teases with a smile before becoming serious again, âbut youâre really okay with this? With me?â
âNo matter what shape you take or path you have to choose, itâs always been us against the worldâ I slowly close the distance between. âIf you could trust me more, this can be a new start for usâŚâ I stop before him, waiting for him to take the next step in defining our future.
He takes my hand, gently running his thumb across my knuckles.
âAnd if I want this ânew startâ to be different than before?â he asks softly
âDifferent?â
âI can give you everything we dreamed of, everything I always wanted to. Iâm not just some orphan Empress Josephine took in anymore⌠I can stand beside youâ his voice lightly trembles as he speaks.
âBut Skyhaven-â
âI am Skyhaven.â he cuts me off. âAnd weâre restoring this countryâs name and honor. I will stand by you, Princess. Just give me a chance⌠please.â he pleads
âNo more hiding in the shadows or trying to do everything aloneâ I say as I move my hand to intertwine our fingers. âIf you want to define us⌠differently⌠then we become a team, the good and the bad.âÂ
Caleb pauses and hesitates for a moment. âIf you give me a little more time, I can hurry to wrap things up-â he starts before I interrupt him.
âCaleb. Itâs either together or not at all. Iâm not interested in being a useless princess that stays locked up in a palace, ignorant of the happenings outsideâ
âI donât want to hurt you or see you in pain and this is complicated- it would shatter your world, everything youâve knownâŚâ Caleb begins to ramble off, a hint of anxiety in his voice.
âWhy do you keep making decisions for yourself? It feels like we continue going in circles. I keep telling you I can help you, that I donât need protection but you continue insisting that this will break me- that you will break me. I want to be on your side, I really do, but if you keep shutting me out Iâll have no choice but to take matters in my own hands, regardless of what you want.â I slowly rest my hand on his face to caress his cheek. âWhy wonât you let me in?âÂ
I see a spark of pain in his eyes as he searches between mine, weighing the consequences. He opens his mouth to talk before closing it again.Â
âCaleb⌠pleaseâ I beg, âI would do anything for you⌠Iâd sacrifice myself for you-â but as the words exit my mouth, Calebâs face darkens.
âDonât ever say that againâ he declares harshly. âI would rather you despise and hate me your entire life than you ever sacrifice yourself.â
He lets go of my hands and moves to sit on the edge of the bed, dropping his head into his hands.
âPipsqueak⌠I canât live without you. The past few years alone felt like an eternal hell I forced myself through to protect you but now that youâre here⌠I canât bear the thought of letting you goâ He raises his head to look at me. âI canât tell you everything. I wish I could, but there are some things I have to face alone. If only I could selfishly claim that Iâm doing everything for you butâŚâÂ
I sit next to him, taking a deep breath before turning to look at him.
âThen we work together but separately. You help me and Iâll help you. I donât need to know everything, I solely ask that you stop shutting me out completely. Trust that Iâll accept every side of you, the same way you accept every side of meâ
He gives a dry laugh. âYou have no doubts that Iâll always accept every side of you?â he asks, shock in his voice
âOf course. I can only assume you think of me how I think of you and, while this is a version of you I have yet to fully know, I accept it all. Were you not the one who would say you want all Iâm willing to give you, and all that I wantâ I begin as Caleb chimes in.
âIs what Iâll offer youâ Caleb finishes my sentence with a light smile. âBy Astra, Pipsqueak, you really like me that much?â He teases.
âYes, Iâm a very foolish princess who hopelessly fell for her very charming knightâ I reply softly, resting my head on his shoulder.
A comforting silence fills the room as he holds my hand, intertwining our fingers, his thumb drawing small circles against my skin.
âYour squadron is in the dungeonâŚâ he says gently, slightly hesitating as he continues, âunharmed but pending interrogationâ.
I immediately perk up and lift my head off his shoulder to look at him.Â
âThey are truly okay?â
âThey are,â he replies with a gentle smile. âAnd if you would rather answer my questions, I will spare them from any interrogation.â
âThank you, Caleb⌠truly, from the bottom of my heartâÂ
âAll it took was giving you classified information and a way to help your squadron?â he teasingly mocks, but I shake my head in reply
âNo- well yes, thank you for that, but I was expressing my gratitude for letting me in⌠for allowing me to know this Caleb.â
