Something I wish we got to see more of with Mother Gooseberry is the fact that Futterman actively acknowledges that he isn't the Futterman puppet, at least to some degree. And is, in fact, just another person in the same body as Gooseberry. ( in terms of their plurality )
I'd like to think that Futterman, being so attached to his source, while also constantly blurring with Gooseberry's insistent use of the childrens show character persona, just finds it more natural to speak with ventriloquism as the Futterman puppet rather than simply speak through Phyllis herself. As he just doesn't associate himself with the body or her at all, and it's probably very unnatural for him.
In the event that they lost the Futterman puppet, I think there'd be some pretty obvious signs that it's not Gooseberry or anyone else up there ( I personally interpret the voices changing in cadence and acting as an effect of CONSTANT rapid switching and or shared front. as that would be pretty strenuous for most to deal with while also actively hunting people down , but it could also be fragments of the base alters or entirely different ones. it feels to me as if phyllis has partial-DID that mixes with other mental conditions ) but Futterman, other than his change in voice.
Some that I like to envision are teeth grinding, ironically, and intense eye contact.
Am I thinking too much about this for a mediocre at best and offensive at worst portrayal of a dissociative disorder? YES!!!! do I care? NO!!!!!!
