Mark Aronson ‘80 shares his art and ice cream trivia too! 🍨 Repost from @yalebritishart • This week's staff artist spotlight: Center Connections with Mark Aronson. . "In 2008, intrigued by the factoid that #icecream was first served at court to Charles II during the 1671 annual dinner of the 'Royal Order of the Garter,' I conceived the 'Royal Order of the Cone' and have since drawn thousands of doodles positing the notional idea of 'Garter Brand Ice Cream,' its regalia, accoutrements, and flavors. Recent paintings have abandoned such specifics and riffed the classic geometries of the cone, sphere, and squiggle into abstract use." . "Sir Robert Dudley preceded the 'Royal Order of the Cone' by nearly a century so would not have attended that not famous dinner. But, as a Garter Knight, he wore the regalia bestowed upon the order that has inspired my habit. His raspberry red glazes are delicious." . Mark Aronson heads the Conservation Department and restores paintings at the Center. In addition to life’s lessons learned, he holds a master of science from the @udelaware and a bachelor of arts from @reedcollege. . Huntsman and Hounts, by Robert Polhill Bevan, 1899 (Yale Center for British Art)
This week was the public reopening of the Yale Center for British Art where I have been working for the past 2 months. It was so exciting to see the project complete and all the final touches finished. Most amazing though were the sheer number of visitors that came to see what's changed and how the collection has been reconceptualised with some works appearing in the gallery for the first time. The centre piece of the new and improved space has to be the long gallery on the fourth floor. With paintings displayed so closely together that there is not room for labels, this corridor mimics the galleries that were (and still are) present in numerous British country mansions. #ycbareopens #ycba #yale #newhaven #ct #art #arthistory (at Centro de Arte Británico de Yale)
I have begun a 3 month long adventure at the Yale Center for British Art as part of an international placement scheme. Throughout this time I will be working on a photograph album collated by an officer of the WIR involved in the Morant Bay Rebellion, artwork related to the military in the Caribbean and the Caribbean landscape, and photograph collections related to people of African descent in the c19th particularly African American soldiers in the US Civil War. I am really enjoying the first week of this exciting opportunity and I'm looking forward to all the wonderful things I am able to look at here as well as all of the great events that I will attend. I will be updating the blog more regularly whilst I'm here to showcase some of the great artwork here at the Center, as well as to give some insight into life here at Yale. #phdlife #research #travel #history #newhaven #connecticut #yale #ycba #arthistory #photohistory (at Yale University)
