Name: Yashichi

Debut: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Okay, you got me. This is in fact, more of an obstacle than an enemy. It’s a spinning blade that appears twice in one level of the Mario Zone, and moves along a rail. Can’t be killed unless you have a Koopa Shell. That’s really all you need to know about the enemy itself.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about its name! Now, I don’t really speak much Japanese, so there might be an origin for the name “Yashichi” that I am entirely unaware of. However, the Mario Wiki was only able to uncover one source for its name...

This pinwheel icon that appears in a variety of Capcom games! Now, as we know, Super Mario Land 2 was not developed by Capcom, but rather, Nintendo R&D 1, so having an enemy explicitly based, or at least named after a rival studio’s icon seems a little... cruel?

Then again. This is the early ‘90s we’re talking about, and I mean...
