10: Last kiss
She’s going to find another family.
In a way, he’s happy. Lizzy deserves it. Of all the people he’s met, nobody’s seen as much pain as her in such a short span of time, and any shot of happiness she can get should be taken.
Today is her last day of being near the area. He waits as he always does for her to come, and when she arrives it does his heart good to see her face with more colour in it, her neck free of teeth marks. Lizzy is a beautiful girl, he knows that much. And if she’d been beautiful in her sadness, she’d be much more so with a smile on her face.
One glance at her is enough for her to smile and nod her head.
The unspoken question had been: Did you want an ice cream?
He’s not sure how long they talk. It seems to last forever even as the outside of the cafe shifts from a night sky to early morning bubblgum. She has to leave soon, he knows. But he really doesn’t want her to.
Letting go is difficult. It feels like he’s losing family.
When Lizzy’s arms wrap around him and a quiet ‘thank you for everything’ comes from her mouth, he breaks into pieces. And quietly, so quietly, he kisses her forehead.
His lips form ‘you’re welcome’ against her skin, even without any voice.
When Lizzy leaves the shop, he stands at the window and watches her go.
And he prays she’ll be happy.
