Ghost Manor | Xonox | Atari 2600
Xonox released a number of double-ender 2600 cartridges around the video game crash. Many of them (Artillery Duel among them) were duds, but I really really like Ghost Manor, released in 1983. It’s also one of the rare early console horror games, alongside notables like Haunted House, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and iMagic’s Dracula.
The premise is simple: you must rescue your pal (selectable via the colour/b&w switch), imprisoned in Castle Dracula. The first level requires you to gain points from interacting with a friendly ghost, whereas in level two, you use a spear to kill off ghost, goblins, and an axe-wielding mummy in order to get into the castle. You have a limited number of spears — precision is required. There are five levels overall.
And yes, this game has an ending — a rarity for the 2600. It’s an overall short game, with an hourglass setting a time limit. I found the second level tough, and it’s as far as I got for now. It’s also pretty easy to die, leading to a rather sombre reunion on the final screen:
Overall the graphics are pretty rad (the chopping mummy!) and the music is chilling. It was pretty late at night when I first launched the game and the opening theme blared through the house, prompting an “oh that wasn’t creepy at all” from my wife, who was trying to sleep.

You’re in for some Double Trouble from Xonox. What a bizarre name for a company.
