The Xochipala style emerged in the region now known as Guerrero, Mexico, around 1500-500 BC. This period in Mesoamerican history precedes the classic civilizations like the Maya or Aztec.

Es el centro urbano más representativo de la cultura Mezcala, con base en un estilo propio de piedra tallada y en las figurillas denominadas como estilo Xochipala. Además durante su apogeo se construyeron 18,000 metros cuadrados y sus edificios corresponden a un estilo arquitectónico peculiar: algunos cuartos y basamentos están decorados con hileras de piezas circulares de piedras conocidas como clavos; otros con un tipo de tableros en escapulario y unos más, techados con lajas saledizas, sistema conocido como bóveda falsa.
