"Last week, while passing through the Honolulu Art Museum on my way back to Hawaii, I realized it was the place where Luigi and I first met. The feeling of being suddenly pulled back to memories by a single location was so real and deeply moving. It reminded me of this tragic person and event. I found photos on my phone of him being forced to be my Instagram boyfriend, taking pictures for me because the other alumni traveling with me were too old to edit them."

"Luigi was my classmate and fellow alumnus at Penn. We met in February 2023, traveled together, and organized and participated in several Penn alumni events in Hawaii. On the day of the incident, I saw the news and felt a surge of grief. We had planned to hang out after I returned from Japan. The next day, I couldn't help but send him a message of condolence, but he never replied."

Luigi is of Italian descent, from Sicily to be more specific. Sicilians are of North African descent so they have a more “ethnic” look to them than people from other regions of Italy.

For the last year people have cracked jokes about society finally finding out if Italians were white because of the terrorism charges. Comparing him to old Egyptian paintings, saying he looks Iranian, Latino, Moroccan, etc. One news station even described the suspect as “light skinned” and now we have the full 911 call where the caller hesitates when asked if the suspect is white.

We got to hear one of the police officer that arrested him, said he watched Fox news and that people from Altoona didn’t wear face masks because they have antibodies, let’s all use context clues here please.

To us Luigi is a white man because we interact with people from different backgrounds all the time but to a white as fuck town, he stood up. His grandfather faced discrimination by not being allowed to enter a country club because he was Italian.

They saw a racially ambiguous man wearing a face mask and panicked, plain and simple. I don’t think the core complaint was “he looks like the shooter” but actually it was “he doesn’t belong” and from there it evolved to “maybe he is the shooter”.

White people have a system where they measure just how white you actually are and between blonde-straight haired and blue eyed people, Luigi doesn’t fair high.
