February 27, 2025 - Northern Plain-Xenops (Xenops mexicanus) Found from southern Mexico through Central America to Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, these birds in the ovenbird family live in forests. They feed on insects, their eggs, and other invertebrates, picking prey from surfaces as they cling to vines and branches and using their distinctively shaped bills to pry and chisel into dead wood. Pairs dig nest cavities in decaying trees and line them with soft materials, sometimes reusing hollows made by other species. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks.
