While X.commerce and Magento are related products, they serve different purposes. X.commerce is a platform for managing eCommerce across multiple channels, while Magento is a platform for building and managing online stores specifically. Some of the tools and services offered by X.commerce can be integrated with Magento, allowing businesses to take advantage of both platforms. However, Magento can also be used as a standalone eCommerce solution without using X.commerce.

"A key point is that the new X.Commerce platform will enable merchants to more easily integrate offline and online commerce efforts. For example, if a merchant wants to launch a new mobile app, the X.commerce platform would make it easier to plug that app into other existing data such as in-store inventory, current in-store prices, and current special deals, not to mention e-commerce efforts."

Ebay has recently purchased the software giants Magento and are planning on building a new ecommerce platform called xCommerce.  xCommerce will take the best elements out of Magento and with Ebay’s experience they will hopefully produce a more elegant solution catered towards search engines and site usability (both improving the number of conversions). XCommerce will be hosted by Ebay so it won’t be as open and easily customisable as Magento, time will tell how xCommerce fairs when it’s finally revealed in 2011/2012.
