Swings and pinky promises
shhh @hklnvgl did you see this coming? đ I know this is probably not entirely a surprise but I hope the fic trope is because since you love kidfics, I wanted to write something like that for you! đ
Word count: 1k
Summary: au where adam and ronan meet as kids
---
Adam sat on one of the swings in the park, slowly swinging back and forth. Sometimes on Sundays, his mother would bring him along with her while she worked in the department store on the other side of the street. The park was not crowded in the mornings so he liked being here and sometimes he brought a book to read as well.
âHey, youâre Adam, right?â
He looked up at the voice to see Ronan standing in front of him. He was a new student in their class as he had been homeschooled till this year. That is why he talked to Adam occasionally because he didnât know Adam was the quiet and strange kid. Eventually he would stop too.
âI am,â Adam said. âRonan, yeah?â
Ronan nodded, his dark curls bouncing. âWhy didnât you come to school for three days?â
Even though the bruise on his jaw was starting to fade, Adam instinctively ducked his head down to look at his worn out shoes. He didn't want Ronan to ask about it. âI was sick,â he mumbled.
âThat's bad. I hate being sick,â Ronan said, wrinkling his nose. âAre you okay now?â

ROWAN
âPlease call me,â her voice had sounded so broken and desperate in the last one, but somehow almost hopeful in a way that twisted the knife in his gut even harder. He had signed her papers, Rowan just didnât know why she kept calling. It was like having it rubbed in his face, that heâd lost her. The only thing in the world heâd sworn to the gods, he had done it so effortlessly. Without even trying, really. And now she just wouldnât leave him alone.Â
There had never been a single second of any day over the last eight years, nine months, and 26 days that he stopped loving her. Even through all the heartbreak, even through how godsdamned painful it had been when he came home to everything gone, he loved her through all of it. He loved her when he watched her first role, her second, and her third. He loved her while watching her romance with her agent blossom in the tabloids. Rowan loved her still when her engagement got out and she showed up at his house being a complete bitch about the divorce. For every second that he had known her since he was three years old, he loved her. And thinking that it was about time to let go was absolutely destroying him in ways he never knew.Â
So hearing her voice so broken in the newest voicemail was like being skinned alive. She was hurting somehow and there wasnât anything he could do about it. It wasnât his job anymore. Aelin had someone new. Aelin made her choice and now he would have to learn to deal with it.Â
But that didnât make it easy.Â
The front door knob jiggling, the lock clicking, and the door being thrown open interrupted his thoughts completely. The spitfire herself came storming in, barely giving him half a glance as she headed to the second bedroom that housed her belongings.
âWhat,â he said dryly, âare you doing?â
âA grand gesture. Turns out that you and I are still hitched,â she called over her shoulder, rummaging around in that bedroom. His eyes fell closed, the memory of signing the papers vivid in his mind. Heâd just about had a nightmare every damn night since he signed them⌠which meant the mistake had been on her end.Â
When he finally forced his body into motion, finally made himself enter that room, she was half zipped up in the wedding dress sheâd worn when they were younger. Despite eight years it fit her like a glove, ivory satin and lace clinging to her figure to where it pooled at the floor. One of the inch-wide straps was hanging off her shoulder, her chest rising and falling heavily as she appraised him over her shoulder.
âYou kept telling me to go home? Well, here I am.â She was gesturing behind her back, silently telling him to zip her up and he stepped forward, fingertips toying with the zipper before finally pulling it down.
âAnd why would you want to be married to me anyway?â He said slowly, turning over those words sheâd said twenty years ago with her hands on her hips and her eyes as wild as her heart.Â
Aelin looked at him, every bit as wild as she had been back then and took his face in her hands despite the satin straps limiting her range of motion as they fell down her arms. She looked into his heart and soul and reached up on her toes so that their lips were barely brushing in a whisper of a kiss as she said, âSo I can kiss you anytime I want.â
And then they were kissing, and he felt like for the first time in eight years he was awake, he was alive. Everything suddenly made sense, all the puzzle pieces had fallen into place and gods above he could breathe.Â
Rowan carried her to his bed and gently set her down then sat back on his knees to take her in. He reached out and traced her swollen lips as her wide crystal clear eyes looked back up at him. There was something so sensual and sexy about her laying there, the straps of the dress half down her arms, bra fully exposed and satin crinkled from him laying her down. He kissed her again, unable to resist that perfect, full mouth that he wanted desperately to coax sinful sounds from.Â
Sitting back, his hands ran up her legs under the dress until his fingers found the lace of her panties and tugged them down, disposing of them behind him on the floor. Aelinâs teeth ran over her bottom lip, and he wasted no time in pushing the dress up to bunch it around her hips. Despite how bad he wanted her completely bare and open before him, Aelin in the dress she had married him in years later was flooding him with desire he hadnât known since he last had her. She had barely been a woman then, though, and he barely a man. And now when he pulled his shirt over his head it was evident in the way her eyes blew wide with desire that she was thinking something similar.Â
She reached out and ran her fingers over his stomach, tracing the lines of his abdomen with cool fingertips until she hooked one finger under the waistband of his jeans. But Rowan hadnât even started with her yet, so he shook his head and settled between her legs with a kiss to her stomach.Â
A kiss that meant so much more than lips pressed against skin, and her fingers gently caressing his cheek told him she understood.Â
Rowan continued his descent, not stopping until his lips were wrapped around the most sensitive parts of her and her fingers were in his hair, her voice begging him not to stop. And he didnât stop, not until she was coming completely undone and doing her best to push him away but he didnât relent until she was shaking and too sensitive to be touched anywhere below her waist. Then, and only then, did he sit up and pull that dress off of her, did he throw away the flimsy material covering her breasts, did he finally stand at the foot of the bed and remove the rest of his own clothing.Â
âBeautiful,â he breathed, running a hand from her neck down her stomach, running both hands down her thighs. âEvery single inch of you,â and he claimed her mouth with his, lingering and slow kisses that told her that he had every intention of taking his time with her. Rowan was in no hurry. He hadnât had his love for almost nine years and was determined to make the most of every single second.Â
When he settled between her hips and nudged at her entrance, the feeling alone of just her was almost too much to handle. The heady scent of sex combined with what only could be described as Aelin had him so high that if you had asked him, he would have told you he didnât know why people did drugs. Not when this existed, when he had this to tumble into every night. Heâd swear he didnât even need to taste alcohol or the finest desserts ever again. She would do. Everything in her face told him it was exactly the same for her, she was just as high as he was.Â
And then he was sliding into her and both of them were gasping, her nails digging harshly into his back in a way that felt almost too good. It was an effort to go slow, to drag it out the way he wanted but he was determined, and the longer he thrust in and out of her the more intimate the moment became until the intimacy was a palpable, crackling thing.Â
Their cheeks were wet and he wasnât sure when either of them had started crying, but they were. And as they barreled over the edge together, twice, it was too much. Emotionally it was too much, physically he felt more tired than heâd felt in years and that included all the sleepless nights heâd spent staring at her damn photo like it would bring her back.Â
Rowan looked over at her then, shifted onto his side to reach out and brush her sweat coated hair from her forehead. Heâd somehow never had a choice when it came to Aelin, it was always her. But choice or no choice, he would have still chosen her anyway. Looking at her now, he knew she felt the same.Â
âI love you,â she said, her voice thick. Tears streamed from the corners of her eyes as she rolled to face him, to kiss him fully. âIâm sorry it took me so long to come home.â But he shook his head and kissed her fingertips before he sat up fully and reached for his shirt which he handed over to her.Â
âI want to show you something.âÂ

when we were kids, two.
Her first stop upon stepping off the plane and into her rental car had been a ride straight to Rowan Whitethornâs house. It was small and simple, a white house with green shutters like Aelin had wanted at the time. Looking at it from the outside, it was entirely the same. Even the dog sleeping on the edge of the porch with her nose drooping over the side.Â
âFleetfoot,â she said, but the dog didnât come. She was frowning at her, hand shielding her face from the part of the sun that was managing to wiggle its way between her sunglasses when the front door opened a man walked out.Â
At first, she had half the mind to think she was at the wrong house. That maybe Rowan didnât still live in their little house anymore. That, maybe, he lived somewhere else. But then she noticed that the silvery hair - piled on top of his head in the messiest bun sheâd ever seen - only looked darker than it was because it was smudged in places with some sort of black substance. Grease, maybe, but she couldnât really tell. Not that it mattered. This was not the Rowan Whitethorn that she had left behind.Â
That man was a boy in comparison to the one that stood on the front porch, looking at her like heâd seen a ghost. Because this man was completely packed with muscle. This man was all hard lines and angles and a very feminine part of her pointed out just how hard she was ogling him but gods above had the years been kind to him. Rowan, it seemed, looked better than heâd ever looked when they were together. Rowan had transformed into something else entirely. Handsome before, but gods above her mouth was dry and she needed a drink.Â
âWhat⌠are you doing here?â His words were slow and careful, as though he were at a complete loss. She could understand why. Aelin hadnât been back to Orynth since sheâd left when she was twenty. Rowan had been twenty-one, and now the man before her was twenty-nine and every inch of him was corded with muscle that she didnât know where it came from. Heâd always had a nice body, but⌠this was something else entirely. The sleeves of his shirt nearly struggled to keep his biceps contained, Gods above and âÂ
And she was engaged to be married.Â
âI need my papers signed, Rowan. You wouldnât do it with me in Rifthold so I thought if I came here youâd stop fucking around and sign my damn papers.â His face went completely blank and he turned and walked back inside, the screen door of their house - his house - slamming behind him. It took everything in her to not stomp her foot and scream in rage. Instead, she stormed up the steps and let herself in, guns blazing and ready to fight. âDo you have any idea how expensive my attorney is?â
âEnding our marriage is just about money to you?â
âGetting a divorce is about freeing myself from your stubborn ass!â The wildfire that sheâd always felt around him was just that, wild and out of control. Her face was red with fury, her skin crawling in a way that only Rowan could manage.
âGet out of my house.â
âSign my papers, Rowan Whitethorn, and Iâll do whatever you want me to do.â Rowan snorted, ignoring her statement entirely as he gestured toward the front door with his beer.Â
âYouâll do what I want before I even touch those papers, Aelin Whitethorn Galathynius. Get out.â He had started walking toward her and, in a moment of embarrassing intimidation, she nearly tripped over herself as she stumbled backwards and out the door. Gods, he was huge. Heâd always been a good head taller than her, but now with all the muscle⌠with his jaw clenched like that he was downright scary.Â
Before she even realized she was outside on the porch, he jerked the door and slammed it in her face.
âWhy wonât you just sign my papers!âÂ
~*~
From inside, her voice was muted but he knew what she had yelled. Why wonât you just sign my papers? A lot of reasons, the first being â
âBecause you have turned into some fire-breathing bitch and Iâd like nothing more than to piss you off!â
He had been furious enough when he had recognized that, after eight years, his wife was back in Orynth. Not only was so back, she was being an ungrateful brat, yelling at him and throwing tantrums in his driveway like she owned the damn place. The house was in his name, thank you very much.Â
The anger only manifested when, as he downed several gulps of his beer, that he heard the lock click and the door swing open. Again, like she owned the damn place. It might have been their house, but she had been gone for so long that there wasnât a corner that still smelled like her. Even the room that housed what she had left behind didnât carry a single ounce of her scent anymore. If anything it smelled as musty as their marriage. He tried not to go into that room.Â
Rowan turned slowly on his heel to find his bitch of a wife staring at him with a hand on her hip and the spare key sheâd hidden nine years ago held between two fingers.Â
At the time, it had been a running joke. It had been funny that Rowan didnât know where the key was because he wasnât ever the one who needed it. Aelin locked herself out constantly and Rowan used to joke that if she told him where it was, that heâd start getting locked out, too. Now that she was using it to practically break and enter, Rowan didnât find it so funny. But Aelin did.Â
Knowing it would likely backfire, Rowan pulled out his phone and sent off a text, praying to any god that would listen to dispose of his wife. He didnât care if that disposal happened at the bottom of a lake. Or a ravine. A quarry, even. He just wanted her gone and off his property. Never-mind that the property used to be theirs. It was his, and she had no right to be on it.Â
âYou canât call the police on me for walking into my own damn house,â she all but shrieked when the police car, flashing lights and all, rolled into the driveway.Â
âYou donât live here,â he hissed at her, reaching for the key in her hand that she managed to keep out of his grip. Nobody had ever got quite so deep under his skin like Aelin had. It was like having a thousand splinters shoved under your fingernails. She herself was a splinter in the nail bed that was his life.Â
Rowan let out a heavy sigh and walked over to the front door when he heard the police car door slam shut, silently hoping it be anyone but â
âAelin Ashryver Galathynius, as I live and fucking breathe,â the low voice grumbled, followed by quick footsteps that resulted in two strong arms snatching up her lithe body. Aelin went from squealing to sobbing in seconds, and Rowan could make out the way her shoulders shook with something between excitement and remorse at what she left behind. If she even felt that sort of thing.Â
If only Lorcan had answered the plea for help himself and not sent Aedion fucking Ashryver instead.Â
~*~Â
Seeing Aedion again after eight years was a combination of the best and worst thing to happen to her today. Arguing with Rowan had definitely been worse, but⌠leaving Aedion behind again wasnât going to be easy. Some small part of her had hoped to slip into Orynth and back out again without having to see her family at all, but she knew how awful that was.Â
It wasnât because she didnât love her family. Aelin adored her parents. Aedion had been her best friend besides Rowan growing up. She missed Aedion and her mom and dad every single day. Some days so much she felt like she couldnât breathe. On those days, she tended to roll closer to Chaol and hold him tighter because it felt like he was all she had in the world.Â
But her parents didnât want to visit her in Rifthold, and Aedion had come once and never gone back after that. In the pending divorce, it was like Rowan had won the dog and her family. Not to mention his own. Fleetfoot hadnât even come to her when sheâd called her.Â
But now, with her arms tight around Aedionâs neck for the first time in six years, some part of her felt whole again. She wasnât a fire-breathing bitch to Aedion, she was only ever Aelin.Â
Maybe she hadnât lost everyone in the divorce after all.Â
~*~
The entire drive to her parents house, they talked about everything theyâd missed like theyâd not spoken in years. It wasnât true, they talked almost every day, but there was something different about seeing someone in person when it had been such a long time that you looked like different people.Â
Even as they drove by different landmarks around the city, Aedion brought up different memories or shenanigans they had all gotten into when they were younger. And gods did it feel good to laugh so freely with her hand in his.Â
But the closer they got to her parents house, the closer she got to revealing the news of her engagement to her mom and dad, the heavier the weight seemed to be. She was asking a man for a divorce so she could spin right into another marriage. A divorce from a man that they loved and had spent more time with in his life than they had her own. Divorcing a man that was literally a son to them to wed someone they only knew through photos. It was a sinking feeling, but not because she wasnât thrilled about marrying Chaol. But because she was thrilled about divorcing Rowan.Â
âAelin?â Her motherâs voice was laced with surprise as she took in her only daughter sliding out of Aedionâs police cruiser. The weak smile that she gave her mom didnât say everything she wished it did, but the tears that started to fall very well may. When her mom wrapped her arms around her Aelin couldnât help the sobs that broke out for a second time that evening. She had missed her motherâs cool touch, her loving embrace, her scent so fiercely that she hadnât even realized how much. âRhoe! Our baby is home!â Her father didnât hesitate to pull her from her motherâs arms, only for her mom to worm her way back into the embrace. It was the happiest she had felt in a long time.Â
âI canât believe you saw Aedion first -â
âI picked her up from Rowan,â Aedion interjected, hands sliding into his pockets as he leaned against the front porch. Aelin gaped at him, wanting to throw a vulgar gesture over her shoulder while her parents led her inside, but his laughter followed her in as he shouted heâd be back tomorrow. Good. She wanted her parents to herself.Â
âSo weâre last priority, is it?â Rhoe asked, sitting on the couch and tugging Aelin to sit beside him. She offered him a half smile, wiping at her nose with her other hand.Â
âThatâs not how it is, Daddy, I just need Rowan to sign my divorce papers is all.â Her father leaned back a bit at that, brows raised in what she could only assume was surprise. But why? Aelin had been trying to divorce Rowan for years.Â
âMaybe heâs changed, Fireheart,â he said softly, and Aelin snorted in surprise. Behind her, she could hear her mother clicking her tongue at her father as if telling him to knock it off.Â
âNobody can change that much. He showed up half-drunk to our wedding and threw up on my shoes. We didnât dance at our reception, he forgot his vows, he ââ
âWas a boy then. He has grown into a fine man, and -â
âYou know who is a fine man, Dad?â Aelin, nostrils flared began to dig through her purse until she found the engagement ring Chaol had slid on her finger days before. She shoved it onto her finger so hard that she almost broke her nail in the process. Â âMy fiance. My fiance is a fine man that doesnât tell me Iâm a fire-breathing bitch for going after what I want. He isnât going to ruin my wedding day, heâs going to show up to the reception and dance with me, and dammit, Dad, he loves me more than Rowan ever did. So please, save your breath on selling Rowan on me again. This is unreal.â Aelin pushed herself to her feet, grabbed her bags, and began walking herself back to her old room. âIâm going to bed.â
