Valentina Suntzeff (1891-1975)
Valentina Suntzeff (1891-1975) graduated from the Women’s Medical Institute in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) in 1917. In 1920, she and her family emigrated from Russia to Harbin, China where she worked as a physician at Central Hospital. In 1924, she, her husband Alexander, and daughter arrived in San Francisco with this Suntzeff family passport.
In 1930, Valentina Suntzeff started as a volunteer researcher in the Department of Pathology of the Washington University of School of Medicine in St. Louis. She authored over 90 articles, specialized in cancer research, and became research associate professor. Her fascinating photograph collection and other papers are in our archives. Her autobiography tells of her experiences as a doctor both in Russia and the United States.
