On May 8, 1945, the Allied powers formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany's armed forces
The end came quickly. On April 30, with Russian troops on his doorstep, Hitler killed himself in his bunker in Berlin. On May 4, German forces in Holland, Denmark, and northwest Germany surrendered to British Field Marshal Montgomery. On May 7, Germany signed an unconditional surrender with the Allies in Reims, France. Here, looking north from 44th Street, Times Square is packed with crowds celebrating the news, May 8, 1945.

At yesterday’s reception, The Prince william and Prince George spoke with 101 y/o veteran Alfred Littlefield. He told them he was just 20 when he joined the army and swam onto the beaches of Normandy under heavy fire.
When George asked - What was it like when you were coming in?
Alfred replied, “Pretty awful.”
He told the young prince, “You know, it’s very important you are here today. It’s days like this that we should use to talk about things like this, so the younger generation can have some understanding. There aren’t many of us left.”
Turning to Prince William, Mr Littlefield added: “You should be very proud.”

Do all Soviet/Russian war monuments list the war as 1941-45 because they were buds with the Nazis until that stopped working out for them? All of the ones I've seen with dates start the clock in '41.
