         𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥   𝐢𝐭   𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭   𝐲𝐨𝐮   𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥:   𝐚𝐧   excitement,   perhaps,   to   share   his   hobby   with   his   favorite   human...   with   his   lover.   a   genuine   attempt,   to   show   wriothesley   something   he   enjoys...   or   maybe   just   some   harmless   fun,   in   an   effort   to   convey   to   him   what   he   likes.   in   this,   neuvillette   is   truly   innocent.   water   tasting   is   a   benign   hobby...   if   not,   a   little   humorous,   but   as   he   holds   sovereignty   over   the   element...   each   spring,   river,   pond,   lake...   they   all   offer   something   different.   and   neuvillette?   he   finds   it   fascinating.

         so   here   is,   in   his   kitchen   with   poor   wriothesley   -   serving   him   crystal   glass   after   glass   after   glass   of   various   waters,   and   enjoying   each   attempt   the   warden   has   made   to   navigate   their   locales.   he   has   been...   well   he   has   been   wrong   for   the   all   of   it,   but   one   out   of   five   surely   shouldn't   be   so   difficult   right?   he   aught   to   be   able   to   guess   this   one.   it's   clear   as   day   in   the   lingering   aftertaste,   the   heady   clear   warmth   and-

                           neuvillette's   face   falls   like   a   curtain.

         𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡   𝐭𝐡𝐞   𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐡𝐬   𝐨𝐟   𝐭𝐡𝐞   𝐬𝐞𝐚,   at   the   bottom   of   the   fortress   proper   -   he   can   feel   the   thrum   of   water   around   them,   the   tender   caress   and   price   of   what   lurks   beneath   the   surface.   here   though   -   it   speaks   no   joys,   too   in   tune   with   the   behaviors   of   it's   master   -   the   mood,   that   darkens   the   hydro   sovereign's   cloudy   skies.   his   sensitive   ears   pick   up   on   too   much.   the   whirring   of   many   gears   within   the   fortress   itself,   the   click   of   his   own   heels   across   steel   as   he   paces,   the   steady   tick-tock   of   one   of   the   many   clocks   in   the   office,   and   finally...   wriothesley's   heartbeat,   strangely   so   slow   and   even,   when   neuvillette's   was   jack-rabbiting   in   his   chest.   why   was   the   duke's   not   doing   the   same?   should   it   not   be   doing   the   same?   he   didn't   understand.

         and   yet,   ethereal   features   remain   impassive,   the   hidden   candor   of   his   gaze   peering   up   through   blue   tinted   lashes   at   the   warden.   silence   reigns   supreme   between   them,   heavy   as   the   pressure   of   the   water   outside,   and   neuvillette...   a   furrow   ticks   between   his   brows,   as   he   works   to   process   what   he   feels   -   works   to   understand   why   his   chest   feels   so   damn   tight.   wriothesley   makes   things   so   complicated.   emotions   were   indecipherable   on   the   best   of   days...   but   throw   in   their...   situationship,   and   the   chief   justice   was   well   and   truly   up   a   creek   without   a   paddle.   and   that   was   saying   something,   given   the   fact   he   had   gills   and   fins.   

         ❝   ⸻   you   have   gone   too   far   this   time,   wriothesley.   ❞   vishap's   gaze   fixes   on   him   fully   now,   the   bright   slit   of   his   pupils   near   luminous   in   the   low   lighting.   he   wants   to   touch   him.   wants   to   kiss   him.   but   fails   in   even   that.   instead,   that   knot   between   his   brow   increases,   heart   jackrabbiting   further   -   faster,   harder.   was   he   dying?   ❝   i   -   you...   ❞   that   previous   silence   had   been   so   defeaning,   if   only   because   it   had   been   left   ringing   in   the   wake   of   the   duke's   raised   tones,   normal   firm   gentleness   replaced   by...   what   was   the   word...   anger?

         confusion   melts   to   frustration   in   in   an   instant,   lips   pursing,   eyes   narrowing,   and   his   body   drawn   rigid.   ❝   you   do   not   get   to   speak   to   me   like   that,   your   grace.   ❞   and   now,   perhaps,   the   leviathan   bares   his   teeth.

           𝐓𝐇𝐄   𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐊𝐎𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆   𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓   𝐎𝐅   𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐇   𝐋𝐈𝐘𝐔𝐄𝐍   teas   permeates   his   apartment,   leaves   steeping   arduously   in   the   pot   that   boils   over   his   stove.   upon   a   mother   of   pearl   inlaid   tray   does   he   adorn   a   series   of   light   blue   saucers,   cups,   sugar   cubes,   cucumber   sandwiches,   and   the   pot   itself.   though   it   is   an   early   morning   hour   -   he   knows   his   lover   to   wake   for   this,   and   neuvillette   hopes   to   stir   him   indeed.   so   with   careful   claws   (for   at   home,   he   wears   nothing   but   wriothesley's   shirt   and   an   apron   -   this   too,   a   tactical   choice),   he   hefts   the   tray   -   and   makes   for   the   bedroom.

           slim   hip   nudging   the   door   aside,   he   enters   the   darkened   room   with   little   fanfare.   illuminated   by   the   slats   of   sunlight   beneath   the   dark   curtains   and   his   own   horns,   neuvillette   places   the   tray   upon   wriothesley's   nightstand,   and   swoops   downwards   -   ever   so   graceful.   hands   placed   gently   upon   the   pillow   next   to   his   head,   the   starlight   of   silken   tresses   cascade   about   them,   and   with   them   -   neuvillette   descends,   peppering   a   sweet   kiss   to   the   stubbled   curve   of   his   lover's   jaw,   the   shapely   stroke   of   his   cheekbone,   and   then   the   fluffy   curl   of   an   ear.   

           ❝   it's   time   to   wake   up,   your   grace.   ❞   he   murmurs,   whisper   soft   and   smoothing   a   hand   down   the   younger's   side.   then   -   he   turns   towards   pouring   the   tea,   a   perfect   cup   -   an   artform,   learned   just   for   wriothesley.   ❝   today   is   your   big   debut,   after   all.   ❞

          𝐚𝐧𝐝   𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭   𝐮𝐠𝐥𝐲,   𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐝   𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐥𝐞   mug   takes   up   central   residence   on   his   desk   -   right   where   he   can   glance   at   it   whenever   he   grows   weary.

         𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐝,   𝐟𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞   𝐡𝐚𝐬   𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧   𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫   𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫   weather   -   a   long   and   steady   stream   of   difficult   trials,   sleepless   nights   for   the   chief   justice,   and   evenings   devoid   of   his   lover   had   left   the   sovereign   in   something   of   a   foul   mood.   say   what   one   will   about   his   apathy,   but   wriothesley   certainly   was   more   aware   than   most   of   the   fact   that   neuvillette   was   anything   by   that.   indeed,   these   days   had   worn   on   him   -   turning   sunny   skies   overcast   and   enticing   a   slow   and   steady   drizzle   throughout   the   third   day   of   this   horrific   routine.   it's   not   quite   a   downpour,   but   it's   enough   to   discourage   citizens   from   the   streets,   and   to   keep   the   boats   from   out   of   the   water.   

         it's   a   stolen   moment   for   them   -   in   the   early   evening,   for   once   he   has   no   court,   and   the   fortress   of   meropide   is   quiet.   they   stand   within   neuvillette's   office,   the   drizzle   a   steady   drip   and   the   evidence   of   tears   somewhat   clear   upon   his   face.   his   hands   are   splayed   upon   a   broad   chest,   and   he   looks   up   through   still   damp   lashes   at   the   duke,   that   strange   inhuman   gaze   of   his   almost   ashamed   of   his   vulnerability.   yet   it's   the   dash   of   sweet   lips   upon   his   forehead,   the   way   the   warden's   scent   overtakes   him...   and   neuvillette   sighs,   low   and   dramatic,   as   his   head   slumps   forward   onto   a   broad   shoulder.   

         ❝   apologies,   your   grace.   ❞   he   murmurs   softly,   but   his   voice   does   not   sound   as   solemn   as   moments   ago,   ❝   it's   been   a   rough   few   days.   ❞   without   you.   but   he   doesn't   say   that   part,   only   allows   himself   to   nestle   closer,   arms   winding   around   wriothesley   while   outside,   the   rain   ceases   entirely,   and   clouds   have   already   begun   to   part   to   blue,   clear   skies.
