Any tips for OC creating? I have an OC in the Hp fandom and I always feel the character is lacking something
Here are some tips I’ve learned over the years:
• Introduce the character gradually. The canon characters are the most important, so if your OC is going to have a lot of relevance, integrate them progressively and naturally. Don’t make them the epicenter of everything. Let the reader get used to them little by little.
• Avoid info-dumping their story all at once. This is a new character the audience doesn’t know, and too much information at once is never a good idea. Learn to compartmentalize their backstory.
• Make them real. Whether it’s an OC for a fandom or an original story, it’s vital they feel like someone you could meet. Try to describe the character as if you’re talking about a friend or classmate to someone who doesn’t know them. Put your audience in context. This approach makes the narration feel more organic, less forced, and more consistent.
• They’re a person, not a list of amazing qualities. Don’t fall into that trap. They need both strengths and flaws, positive and negative traits.
• Keep their personality consistent with their context. If your character has a certain background, their personality needs to reflect that. And if it doesn’t, make sure you have something solid to justify the discrepancy.
• Show, don’t tell. This is a basic but crucial rule. Don’t just tell the reader what your character is like—show them through actions, behavior, dialogue, and how others react to them. Then, if you feel the need, you can emphasize it.
• Give them a foundation: friends, family, acquaintances. Nothing enriches a character more than having their own “world.” Just be careful not to give these secondary details more importance than necessary for the main plot.
• Take inspiration from people you know or have met. This is one of the best ways to create realistic and believable characters.
These are just the basics, but they’re principles I always consider when creating a character, whether it’s an OC or not. I’m not an expert, but I hope these tips help!
