A great deal of unnecessary effort is too often expended on trying to hammer the reader over the head with something you've already conveyed quite well. Jokes you explain are never funny. Stories you explain are never interesting. The key is to provide enough so the reader feels engaged but not so much she can feel you trying to control how she responds to the text.

The reader’s experience of your prose has nothing to do with how hard or easy it was for you to make.

When you are trying to write as simply as you can, you're leaving plenty of comfort zone for the reader. The piece of writing doesn't really exist on the page - it exists between what's on the page and the reader. It's not all the way in the reader and it's not all the way on the page; it's in between. And when you have done things with the least amount of noise and effort, you give readers the easiest access to that middle zone. They get there and they can supply what's needed.
