Only write about your character's plan if it's going to go horribly wrong. Otherwise, it's repetition. If you make your characters say, "We're going to infiltrate the base by doing _____." and they actually do it and nothing goes wrong, then it's boring. The readers already knew that would happen. So instead, surprise them. 

While viewing the YA fiction section at bookstore today I began to get increasingly angry with the book descriptions on the back of the books. Why? 

Valerie knew she was destined to become queen but was she in love with Liam or Jacob?

The only thing more troubling than Morgan’s destiny is her love for both Jethro and George.

Haley knew that she was in love with Ian… until she met Luke. 

What are these infernal things? Answer: Love triangles. They dominate YA fiction and turn interesting plot into a backdrop for a cheap dramatic romance.

Not all love triangles are a bad thing- in fact, in romance novels they can be used as a main plot device. However, in most novels they tend to drown out the really important things and make them seem trivial. They are often unnecessary to the plot and just get in the way.

What irritates me the most about these horrid things is the fact that most of the time the center of the love triangle is a girl. Why is that? It’s because authors are scared to write a story with a female as the main character because it might not sell. That is, unless there’s romantic drama that would draw in a female audience. Men feel uncomfortable reading a story with a female viewpoint and so a female character must appeal to the majority of the female audience.
