CD Review:Ā Flogging Molly - Life Is Good
Vanguard Records 2017
Genre: celtic punk
Okay, I wasnāt going to add this, but then I remembered the days when I used to listen to āShipping Up To Bostonā on repeat, and the nostalgia compelled me. That said, I think itās general knowledge that Flogging Molly is ābetterā (read: less agro) than Dropkick Murphys, but both deal in the same celtic-influenced, string-section-led, high energy punk that youād probably hear when you order a Guinness in Boston. Itās not all great, and the tracks that sacrifice some of the energy to make more of a political point (8ās Jericho referencing) suffer for it, but when FM is on, theyāre on, whether itās the slower, ending-credits feel of 7 and 10, the faster pace of 11 and 3 (the latter about a dying boomtown, one of the political songs that works), or the three-movements-in-four-minutes of 2. Yeah, itās a bit cheesy, but the protein is probably good for you. Probably.
RIYL: Dropkick Murphys, Bad Religion, The Real McKenzies, The Pogues

The Hidden Cameras -Ā āHome on Native Landā Review
Outside Music 2016
Genre: indie rock/indie folk
My first experience with Canadian band was their debut,Ā āThe Smell of Our Ownā, in 2003. Unashamedly gay, led by the quavering vocals of front man Joel Gibb, there was a shamelessness and an urgency to their music. But a lot has changed in thirteen years. Sure, inĀ āTrumpās Americaā, itās not going to be a cakewalk to be LGB or T, but gay marriage is legal in North America, and a vast majority of folks are finding thatĀ ālove winsā as concerns such things. All of which leaves Gibb and his band to abandon the indie rock trappings of their sound and embrace what is called āCanadiannaā - the Canadian version of America. Steel guitars and loping waltzes predominate on Gibbās stab at country music, with guest appearances from Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys (track 3), Ron Sexsmith (track 6&14), and a chorus of Feist, Rufus Wainwright, and Mary Margaret OāHara (track 12). Itās certainly not the Hidden Cameras I first fell in love with - itās not even the same genre as their last record, āAgeā. But the songwriting here is on point, and when Gibb turns on his wavering voice, itās not hard to get sucked into his form of emotive poetry - even if the idiom now is more suitable to barn dances than to rock clubs. Worth a listen!
