You, big lady, were the only Disney character who ever looked like me. And while you may not have had the waistline of a princess, I’ll be goddamned if you didn’t have the swagger of a queen.

Last round, finals stage, 2018 Women of the World Poetry Slam - I chose to do this poem even though I was scared. Why? Well because I'd done it in preliminaries as my 4 minute round poem as in..it's really long when it's done at the speed and build up that feels most comfortable for the piece (finals is 3 rounds of 3 minute poems with a 20 second grace period). I had a plan to have my partner who was in the audience indicate when time was getting near, but the venue was so large and bright I couldn't see a damn thing in the audience.
So I had to wing it.
I had to find a speed that worked for me and for the time constraints. And I was DAMN close to getting a time penalty. DAMN CLOSE. But I didn't. And let me tell you, I've lost slams before on time penalties. More than once. I have been my own worst enemy in slam before being careless about time, but I'm sure you can tell towards the end of the video I was moving like a speedrail cuz I could feel the time getting short (when you do enough slams, you start to know how 3 minutes feels without counting). I chose to just yell over everyone in the audience cuz I couldn't wait for it to quiet down and cut out a line at the end. And it paid off. I won my first individual slam title outside of New Orleans at the 2018 Women of the World Poetry Slam hosted by Poetry Slam, Inc. who also released this video in partnership with Slamfind

A poet and activist originating from the war-town region of Darfur, Emi Mahmoud is the Individual World Poetry Slam Champion of 2015, and the co-Champion of the 2016 Women of the World Poetry Slam. Currently a senior at Yale University, a Leonore Annenberg Scholar, and Global Health Fellow, Emi studies Anthropology and Molecular Biology at Yale in the hopes of one day alleviating structural disparities on maternal and child health in disadvantaged communities the world over. Outside of academics, Emi is involved in the Yale Refugee Project, contributes to an international research initiative, and teaches spoken word poetry on campus and through ConnCAT in order to empower youth with the power of voice in various communities. In recent years, Emi has participated in and co-coached the Yale CUPSI slam team. As a child and adolescent, Emi was a public speaker presenting poetry across the country as part of the Darfur Alert Coalition and raising awareness and aid to address the often blood-relative victims of genocide in Darfur, her homeland. A member of the Loser Slam NPS 2015 National team and 2015 World Champion, Emi has and continues to collaborate with various artists in an attempt to use poetry and other art forms to celebrate the full extent of human expression.

2017 has been a very strange year for me. I went through some of the worst situations in my life. I hurt so much, but I also have had so much love. More than I ever thought was possible for me.
Current life update: I feel so safe. I feel so loved. I am doing so well. I am so excited for my future.
In America, we are taught to scream the word ‘FIRE’ if being assaulted, because no one will help us if we yell 'RAPE.’

The boy’s blood was red. It looked like wet paint. On average, it takes paint three days to dry.
