MIRI: Members of the public are urged to stay calm after some supermarkets here experienced a spate of panic buying due to the recent movement control order announced by the government last night. During a ground check at Ah Hong Grocery here, one of the workers said the shelves were visibly emptier as customers had rushed to fill their trolleys after
Some quotes from this article illustrate the stupidity, futility, and long-term damage caused by panic-buying:
“We are working endlessly to replenish stocks, with the items that we have restocked including vegetables, poultry, and other packaged foods”
This illustrates the selfishness of panic buying, in that millions of shop assistants worldwide who already face an uncertain income because of economic downturn, are being stretched to the maximum in order to accommodate an artificial food shortage.
“I saw other customer buying food products, so I panicked and bought some too...”
I burst out laughing at this. It just goes to show how infectious mob mentality can become-- more so than coronavirus. Panic buying is based on artificial fears about calamities, promoting the buyer to over-estimate their needs. Others see the dwindling stocks, panic, and do the same. The chain continues.
My place is quite remote so I usually come down once a month. I didn’t do any panic buying. Just buying essential items.
Proving that nobody needs to panic. Just a little extra of this, a little extra of that. I actually think the supermarket limits are incredibly generous. In the supermarket I visited earlier, they were offering at least 6 packets of pasta per customer, which I believe is excessive on a good day, unless you rarely go shopping.
“I was given the impression that it would be like a ‘lockdown’, so I bought rice and other essential food products, just in case...”
Well-meaning, but “just in case” is one of the main methods in which people, such as myself, waste money on products by over-estimating what is actually required. Furthermore, a lockdown would not mean that supermarkets selling essentials would close. They *have* to be open, so that people can continue to access necessary items while in quarantine.
