What we learn? Roundhand was at the height of its popularity between 1720-1800, at a time when it was still written with a quill. Engraving, no matter how good, clearly could never equal an original hand-written specimen. George Bickham, and his lifetime plates, “Universal Penman” brought Roundhand to the next level of art, where the most beautiful pointed pen works were collected, engraved and printed to the finest quality.
The development of new printing technique brought about an extraordinary growth in the press and it the output of illustrated books. English Roundhand was widely copied and adapted and became its great success for all sort of work. Once it came to Italy, Roundhand merged with the local style, then popularized around Europe and finally made it way to London with high refines of metal nib art - Italian Roundhand became such a fashion trend for penmen at the time.
In this workshop, we will explore the art of Roundhand, specially English and Italian styles. We will start learning how to write with pointed nib and straight holder, break down the form of pointed pen letters and relate them to the original Roman caps.
