#wool dyeing

Public holiday yesterday, so a good day to pull out the dyepot!

I experimented with adding two colours of dye (Ashford peacock and turquoise), and pre-soaking the fibre in acid before adding the dye.

I was expecting stronger colours at the points where the dye initially hit the fibre, and hoping for a left-right difference between the two colours. Not exactly what happened: instead, the fibre developed a much darker colour on the bottom where it was fully immersed, and a lighter colour on top where it was floating.

I spun the yarn over a year ago but I didn't really have any plans for it, so when I was doing dyeing experiments decided to use it, the aim was sea/water colours and I think it turned out beautifully. The colour repeat on the warp is just longer than the scarf which makes a really nice pattern.

First test dye has been on 32g of unmordanted wool which was added to hot water with about one tablespoon of the extraction liquid and left in a jar on a windowsil for about a day.

It has come out to be a lovely shade of mauve so far. I have added mordanted fibre and aome more extraction liquid to see how that goes, will update when that gets here.

Any advice on Kool Aid dye for wool? I don't have high expectations. A few months back I had a mild hypomanic episode and a really good coupon, and I bought 800 grams of undyed fingering weight wool. So now I should figure out how to dye it.

I picked up a few Kool Aid pouches while grocery shopping to experiment with. Is there a good way to determine how much powder and vinegar to use per weight? I'm struggling to find good info on this as most of what I'm finding is along the lines of an activity for children, and doesn't give good information on how to get strong saturation. Would it be a reasonable assumption to dose the powder and vinegar or citric acid similarly to how you would with, say, Jacquard acid dyes?
